That always the Director's version of the story though - but given his history, it might very well be true. For most films, the last month of two of pre-screening comes back with the results of the audiences' reactions to different parts of the movies, and the marketing people's analysis and feedback. Taken all of this together, they might do some fine tuning, or they might decide to recut the ending or change the story around... If you are interested in more about how this process works, I would definitely suggest picking up Terry Gilliam's "The battle of Brazil" on how the studio exercised a small clause in their contract, took the film away from him and recut it into a love story - complete with different scoring and different sequences - pretty much murdered the movie. Terry didn't lose though, he took his cut and started showing it at film schools and invited reviewers... Well... you can read about the rest of it if you are interested... It is definitely a interesting bit.

The problem with IE in general when it comes to flushing the cache is that you may think you're totally clearing the cache by using the Tools/Internet Options dialog; but, in fact you're not.

IE maintains about a gozillion separate caches with hidden and system properties. Even after you've gone thru the process enumerated above, you can still locate all kinds of graphics, histories, cookies, etc. in these hidden caches. Problem is, if you delete them you can cause your Windows installation to fail, requiring a reinstall of the OS. While that's not necessarily catastrophic if you've got your data files on a separate partition/hard disk, it's still a pain reinstalling all your other software after the OS redo. In fact, I routinely reformat and reinstall Windows (about every six months) just to eliminate all the detritus, both on the hard drive and in the registry.

The only sure way to get rid of all IE's hoarded data files is by utilizing 3rd party software designed for that purpose. CleanSweep and Norton Tools are popular sellers (though I don't use 'em).

One last thing on IE: Microsoft offer free classes on customizing the behavior of IE. I've attended a few. There's a lot more available than just title bars and 'loading logos'. (NB: In fact, it is possible to alter IE's code maliciously from the Internet, by a number of different methods.) If AOL has a partnered browser based on IE, there could be a lot of internal workings different than a standard install, and the casual user would never be able to detect it. Not saying there is a lot different, just saying is all...

Final note: I still have IE installed on my computer, primarily because I want the operating system to work correctly. Removing IE from a Windows computer may cause undesirable behavior. I run Windows because I like to play a wide variety of cutting edge games; other platforms offer neither the quantity nor the quality in games.

But I never run IE; in fact I don't allow the browser to use my router to access the Internet. Too many holes. I use Firefox. And even at that I've managed to trap a couple of Java-based trojans (face it, there's no such thing as safe, only smart). When I want true Internet security, I boot from my Kill-Bill Linux CD-R and unmount all my HD's before enabling my cable. The Kill-Bill ISO is a free download; google it or go to g4tv's archives of Kevin Rose's Dark Tips and search on Kill-Bill.

As to the problem with AOL displaying an old page even after a complete reload has been forced by perfunctory cache flush, I'm buggered if I know. I'd tend to bet that it's an old page on AOL's web cache servers; but I ain't ruling out monkey business in the browser, either. I wish any AOL users who are suffering this problem good luck.

Just remember that there's a real Internet out there, unfiltered by Big Brother AOL, should you ever start to chafe at the continuous oversight of your browsing habits...

Wow, I haven't heard of that slang used before. Is it regional (particularly UK)? Is it an older slang? I found a reference to it in a Beatle's archive - from an interview with Paul and a UK slang dictionary defined it as to travel or move about quickly...

S.T.O.P. - Sit, Think, Observe, Plan? Sorry, that's the only acronym of STOP I know about from my days in the service...

I'm not willing to work that hard, even though Windows is on a separate partition from almost everything else. I just replace my computer every couple of years, not for that reason, but I do appreciate that benefit.

CleanSweep is part of Norton System Works. I run all six components every few weeks but, the only things it ever finds that I want to clean up are Plug-Ins & ActiveX controls that I no longer want. I set IE to keep no history & accept cookies only from domains I have approved; I still clear caches & cookies daily.

I downloaded Firefox Setup 1.0.1 (naturally I typed Firefly, and had to go back & edit) direct from Mozilla (as I recall -- it's been a few months). When I try to install it, I get error 7-Zip. Any advice?

I have a browsing ID with no profile, that accepts no email, and I have a spare ID slot for creating one-time IDs. But I only used them for a few months. I prefer the convenience of using one ID for everything, including online purchasing, and have an account with several online vendors. I reckon there's a lot more entities than AOL accessing, & possibly recording, my browsing habits. I doesn't make me happy, but I've decided not to lose any sleep over it. For the same reason -- my convenience -- I have a driver's license, bank accounts, library cards (city & county systems), and do most of my purchasing by credit card. And I've given up trying to find a dentist or doctor that will accept me as an anonymous patient.

In ten years, I've never found a domain I wanted to access that was blocked by AOL.
