Negative review of the trailer in this month's Empire

Empire Magazine, by far the most read and respected movie magazine in the UK, has given the Serenity trailer a mere two stars (out of five) in its trailer trial section, with the following comment:

"The space effects in Joss Whedon's movie debut look impressive, but it remains to be seens whether our heroes can fill the big screen."

This is weird as Empire a) had previously been supportive of the movie and Joss and b) the preview sounds like it has been written by someone who is a Firefly fan ("our heroes"). Nothing major but I'd rather have had the reaction on here than that.

Then again, Empire is the magazine that gave GoldenEye the Nintendo 64 game two stars. I mean, seriously, two stars for GoldenEye.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Serenity twice already and loved it. I very deliberately avoided seeing the trailer first because I wanted to know nothing -NOTHING!- about the movie beforehand.

I watched the trailer afterward and found it passable, but not great. I thought it was a touch generic, in all honesty. However, all the non-Browncoats I know who've seen it are quite excited by it, so I think it's doing its job.

How can anyone rate a movie based on it's trailer ? I showed the trailer to a non-fan, and they liked it so much to go out and watch the entire DVD. Having seen the movie ( well, what there is of it, to date) I can't find too much fault in the trailer. Sure, they don't always paint an accurate picture of what a movie will be like, but so what?

Granted, there are no light sabers, wookies, or.....oops, have I given away anything ?

You're talking about someone rating trailers (if I read correctly.) Who cares about the trailers? (Other than you and them.)

I didn’t like the trailer and would probably say it in a magazine if asked, doesn’t relate to the movie at all.

I'll admit that while many non fans like it, two of my friends (with tastes I generally admire) commented that it seemed a rather generic trailer and they hoped that the commercials would be different because it didn't compel them to watch it at all.
I admit that a geeky part of me was sad that it gave in to the lcd by having there be sounds during shots of the ship firing up/moving/etc.
It is just a trailer though and good reviews and good word of mouth will help the movie do well despite bad reviews of the movie's trailer.

John Q Public cares about trailers, unfortunatly. If they dislike a trailer they purposefully don't see the film. If they don't care about a trailer they ignore the film completely. All the promo work helps set people's expectations beforehand and so even if a film is good but completely different from the trailer then a lot of people are gonna be dissapointed, which equals bad takings and no sequals.

Remember the fiasco of the firefly trailers where they made it out to be generic sci-fi about a girl in a box?

While this is terrible news for UK publicity. Empire gave the film The Pianist 2 stars which is just ridiculous. I do think the trailer is pretty crappy. I hope the international trailer is good

I don't think you're right about that. I don’t think that if the public reads a review that says the trailer is bad they will avoid the movie.

If someone likes the trailer they don’t need a review telling them to do so. If on the other hand they don’t like it the magazine just saved its credibility so later, when/if they say the movie is good, they will be believed.

I hadn't watched TV since Babylon 5 ended in '98 (couldn't afford cable anymore), and had only a vague notion about "Firefly" from hearing it mentioned as Joss' next project (I was addicted to Buffy for Seasons 2 & 3).

My financial situation precludes my buying DVDs outside of the "Under $10" bin, so boxed sets are generally out of the question.

One day a little over a month ago, I saw Serenity listed on this site...

...and got my first glimpse of Serenity and our BDH's all "walkin' & talkin'"!

I went on a mad dash to make up for lost time, which involved bookmarking EVERY damn site that had the words 'firefly' and/or 'serenity' in them, downloading 4 hours of episodes (starting with "Serenity", of course!), and then scooping up as many of my best DVDs as would fit in a bag, trading them in for the Firefly set, then watching all the episodes in two sittings!

Now I call myself a Browncoat!

That trailer did the improbable, and that makes it mighty!

So please, ease up on all the Trailer Trashing.

You insult what brought me here, and that hurts MY feelings.
