Just saw Hitchikers Guide. . .

You bring up a good point and I'd love to know the answer as well. I'm in LA and saw HHG at an AMC theater yesterday. *No* Serenity trailer :( We had Herbie, Zathura, SW, Chicken Little, Kicking & Screaming and Batman Begins.

I'm going to see HHG again tomorrow with a friend at a different theater chain. I'm *really* hoping the trailer's attached this time. It'd make seeing HHG twice worth it (and I'm a fan of the book).

And Zathura! That was one of the not-at-all-memorable trailers I saw (funnily, I was thinking that this looks like that lame 'Jumanji' and sure enough it is made by the same people...shudder).

Just saw HHGTTG - called the theaters about 20 miles from my place, they said they were NOT showing the Serenity trailer, so I went to my local theater. Saw previews for Chicken Little, Dark Water, and Herbie, but no Serenity. And I guess I'm not enough of a Douglas Adams purist, 'cause I liked the film. A bit uneven, the storyline didn't flow, but there were a few laugh-out-loud moments and more than a few giggles.

They had both the Star Wars AND Serenity trailers attached to the HHGTG movie at my local theatre. I was really stoked and embarassed Aronacus by clapping after both trailers. I read the book, and went into the movie knowing that the creators hadn't stuck to the book. So I took it for what it was meant to be, an entertaining movie that was loosely based on a book by Douglas Adams. I always hate the naysayers and their comments, if they want accuracy then we have the books, and chickies, the movie will only make people buy the books. And in a way thats good right ?

Judging by the reaction of the movie crowd, not anyone knew what the heck Serenity was except a kindly older gent that I had a nice conversation with before the movie. Aronacus said people shouldn't clap after trailers but hooey! I did it anyways! hee hee

Monroe, LA -- no Serenity trailer.

I got there and the trailers were rolling, and when there was no Serenity trailer, so I feared I'd missed it. But I asked a woman who was there before me and she said there was no trailer for a movie called Serenity.

Hitchikers Guide was fun...I enjoyed it a great deal and laughed a lot, but I didn't know exactly what to expect.The president of the galaxy was really funny, though.
Alan Rickman rules.

It was definitely worth the trip for a few reasons, though.
My sis likes Firefly, and she was A LOT more anxious about the trailer than I was. Funny, 'cause she says I'm obsessed. Hee.
Also: matinee is $2.00. There are a few advantages to being in the middle of nowhere.
Best for last: I was waiting for the bus and my sis and I were talking about the HHG (sis LOVED it, btw) and this guy waiting started this great sci fi conversation. I mentioned how disapointed I was about Serenity, and he was all like, "Yeah, I heard about that Joss Whedon movie. They never even gave the show a chance." We went on to discuss more Firefly until the bus came.

Browncoats are truly the nicest people.

I wanted to see the trailer on the big screen first, but now I go to watch it.

Ok,
I'm in Charlotte, NC and went up to Cncord Mills which is an AMC theatre. No Serenity trailer. Nothing even as mildly entertaining as SWIII or Batman Begins, or even Dark Water. which is surprising, 'cause there was like 10 bloody previews. 6-7 of them seemed to be aimed at the 8-10 year old crowd. Chicken little, herbie, jumanji in space AKA zarutha(sp?) Kicking and Screaming, Sharkboy and lava girl, and many other Craptastic trailers. Ummm...since when is The Guide a preteen movie?
As to a review of The Guide: I was disappointed. But that could have been spillover disappointment from no Serenity trailer. I loved the book, and some of the added stuff was funny, I enjoyed the dolphin song, and even got a bit choked up at the Point Of View Gun, But I agree with other reviews that say the direction seemed to change about 1/2 way through, and at the end it felt like it was cut short. I'd say wait til it hits those second run theatres if you have those in your area. Unless you're sure the Serenity trailer is showing with it, then the excitment over the trailer on the big screen may improve your enjoyment of the Guide. *shrugs*

Unfortunately no Serenity trailer here in St. Louis either. From working at the local theatre company for too many years and quite a few at AMC as well, most often the companies tell the theatres to put on trailers according to their demographics. Although I was going to see Hitchhiker's Guide eventually, seeing that trailer would have made my night especially since I went to the giant IMAX size screen specifically to see the trailer. Grr Arrgh. I guess I'll have to call the main office to lodge a complaint. I'm just hoping that alot of these theatres will put the "Serenity" trailer at the front of Star Wars to lure them into the next great sci-fi phenomenon. I can only hope

Who's flying this thing....Oh right, that would be me.

Just saw it, and I have to say I enjoyed it - I read the book a few times when I was younger, heard the radio show and saw the TV series, but was never a huge fan, so perhaps some of the changes didn't bother me (that said, its worth pointing out that Adams changed the story almost every time and as I understand it, the majority of the new elements in the film - including the love story - were his).

The cast was pretty good - though I wasn't sure about Mos Def as Ford, although he grew into it. Freeman was pretty darn good as Arthur and Sam Rockwell worked well as Zaphod, but the undeniable star was Rickman as Marvin - Zooey Deschanel (what's with all these young actresses with the husky voices? - not that I'm complaining) did well with an underwritten part.

The Slartibartfast sequence was strangely moving as well. I'll warn you now, its not wall to wall laughs, but I spent most of the movie with a smile on my face.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for pointing this out. People don't seem to realize that Adams did actually write most of the script--as I understand it he'd been working on it for quite a while before his death. Yes, it was likely revised--but to the best of my understanding the person who revised it was someone who had been working with Adams on the script before he died. So all you people who keep refering to 'the creators' in such snotty tones, you're talking about Adams--whether you like it or not.

Of course this says nothing to how much you enjoyed the film, and obviously even with Adams writing it the movie didn't work for everyone. So I'll give my opinion on how it worked. First, I'll agree with anyone who thinks it had pacing problems. This was always my biggest problem with the books, and it seems to have translated straight across to the movie. You'll either get over it/not notice it, or it'll drive you crazy. Second the humor is bizarre--much of it straight out of the book. If you don't like off the wall humor, you're probably not going to get something like the opening with Dolphins singing about fish. For me, none of the jokes fell flat, but there were places where I was the only one laughing--which leads me to believe that at least some of the jokes may require knowledge of the books, or at the very least a flipped up sense of humor--which I possess in spades.

My last thought deals with the over all theme. It's here that I think the film does best. Yes Arthur's love interest, who in the books isn't intruduced until later, has been cut out. In her place the writers have picked Trillian, who in the books is with Zaphoid throughout. This streamlines plot elements that would have been impossible to fit in otherwise. It also allows for nice growth on Arthur's part. Contrary to what someone else said, I don't think he ever becomes a traditional hero. He's just a guy who crazy stuff happens too, and even getting towards the end he's still afraid to take chances. What I love about the film, which is also what I loved about the books, is how it makes you think about the insane coincidences that run our lives without us even realizing it most of the time.

As you can probably tell, I loved the movie.
