Hello all. I've only seen one ep of Firefly but I liked it and I am a huge Buffy geek and therefore a big Joss fan. So I'm going to see the advanced Serenity screening next week. Yippy! That does give me just enough time to rent the four DVDs and get caught up. Do you all recommend that I do that, or should I not watch the DVDs before I see the movie? I'm wondering which will make it the better viewing experience. I really appreciate your opinion on this.

Yes, you should watch them. It's only 35 bucks and It's the greatest show in the verse after all.

Only seen one episode and going to a test screening??? You risk the wrath of all Browncoats by telling us this!

I hadn't seen a single second of the show before buying the DVDs - just put my faith in Joss! Certainly was disappointed as loved it - it's one of those rare shows where you get a feel for the characters straight away.

I assume you don't need to have seen the whole series to enjoy the film (afterall, they want to attract as wide an audience as possible), but personally I'd suggest watching the series a) to get as much background info as possible and b) just because you should! You won't regret it...

Id only seen two episodes when I bought the box set and while Id enjoyed them both I wasn't completely hooked until Id seen a couple more. Id definately recommend getting the boxset just to ensure your as hyped as can be before geting in to the theatre.

You should definitley see the series first.

The movie looks pretty epic. But the series explains the political and economic climate of the firefly universe. It would be good to get a better understanding of what came first, and then see the epic confrontations in the movie.

Plus, it's good to watch the series anytime. In fact, i might go watch it now.

If these walls were still walls, what stories they would tell...

There are few things in life as absolutely certain as this. Buy the DVDs. If you rent them, you'll wish you had them later.

That being said, Joss has gone to great lengths to make sure that Serenity is accessable to non-Firefly fans, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it either way. But I'm betting you'll enjoy it even more if you've seen where they've been.

Definitely watch the series first.

1> It's damn good anyway.

2> It'll fill you in on the background the movie might not give you... and as yet I for one have no idea how much of a retread the movie is. Some of the background to the situation presented in the series might be restated or even changed, after all.

3> I'm really jealous. You lucky thing.

Welcome to our little corner of the 'verse Kissthelibrarian! Glad to have you aboard.

I would highly suggest buying and viewing the DVD set first. I think you will enjoy the movie more, understand it better, and take more away w/ you if you have first seen the series. As Relfexive said it will give you some needed background on the 'verse, the character, the political climate of the universe where the movie takes place, and it will set the stage for events to come in the film.
