My Dad (rest his soul) had pretty strict country & western sensibilities, and used to play (piano) in the Big Band Era, too. So I guess it should come as little surprise to anyone who knows music that he also loved Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Halen. By the same token (being a fan of Queen and Heart), I really like Evanescence and (because of my own musical preferences) Nickelback is right in my wheelhouse, as were Alice In Chains and Nirvana, before them. And I don't think my Dad, my children and myself are alone on this: I think most people are not so rigid that they don't enjoy things from eras other than their youth, or that they always cling to them.
If you make a point that strong, I've got to come back on it and object...

some of you dint under stand me. I didnt say that the first five years the only best but it was alot easier back then to come up with gold like the male prostitue or andy kouffmans strange sence of humour and I said that the past years havent been bad some of them were wonderfull like the episoad with christopher(sorry if his name is miss spelled its erarly in the morning and I just woke up) walkin were they were makin fun of the holtel.But I think the actors were good these days I never said the actors were horrible at the acting i said they were worrible at writing thats all.

Zoid, I was wondering if I had any trace of "Fuddy Dutty" syndrome so I made a list of all the movies I own by year, and was quite surprised to find that the majority of them are from the nineties and the present decade. I would have thought a preponderance of titles would be from the 70's, when I was a kid, or the 80's, when I was in my twenties.
I guess you're right, there's always points of nostalga, but most of us are more than prepared to accept the new.
BTW Queen's 'There's no time for us' always gets a moist-eyed reaction from me (alright, I cry, there I said it).

Part of what made SNL great at the beginning was the simple fact that there was nothing else like it on TV at that time. Everything they did was ground-breaking. It's been on for 30 years now and has been imitated for most of that time. If you think the quality has never lived up to those first 5 years, it might just be that you're expecting them to keep "re-breaking" the same ground, which is impossible.

I don't think we need new writers. Fireflyverse is in good hands. But perhaps that 'Other Science Fiction Series', Saturday Night Live, does...
Maybe a skit with space hookers, hmmm? Failing that, when "Serenity" goes gonzo this fall, maybe SNL will get the whole cast as guest stars and JW as a writer for a skit in which they lampoon their roles.
I could see that happening.
