the stargate iris was created by the sgc and is placed inside the ring so that it will form a few nanometers from the event horison this prevents matter from even reforming as well as that the reason the gate dosnt de molecularize is because it is made from s very strong alloy and was later replaced by an even stronger one.
you have to watch the thing more carfully

What do you mean, where is it when open? That's the whole point about an iris: it is made out of narrow strips that retract (kinda sideways) into a circular frame. They're used inside theatre follow-spots, among other things - and back when I was in theatre in high school we had a couple of old ones lying around, and they're pretty fun things to play with, I assure you. Even when you open/shut it slowly so you know how it works, it still seems pretty miraculous. Though as soon as they get the slightest bit dented, they become very, very difficult to open or close - and that is one thing Stargate never addressed.
