Finding Serenity - due out on Friday

Yes, the cover is a problem. When I show it to people, they are going to react to the cover. They are going to think I belong to a cult and want to recruit them. (which may be true, but the book cover should not give that away)
Oh, well, the articles are great. I'm almost finished, and not looking forward to not having more great thought provoking, funny, insightful articles to read!

Yeah, I think I might've gotten one of those looks, too. And then the sweet, mid-40's lady cashier read the rest of the cover and saw the subtitle, "Anti-heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly" and nearly had an apoplectic fit. If I didn't know better (and I don't), I'd suspect the 'self-help'ish title and cover design, juxtaposed against the subtitle's "Hookers", was an elaborate and intentional joke. I guess it all depends on whether you think this would fit Jane Espenson's (and cohorts) wit and intelligence. Given her association with Monsieur Whedon, I wouldn't put it past her.
I know I found that cashier's reaction hi-larious.

No, I didn't try to convert her. I know she wanted to ask, too; but I kept strictly mum. I'll bet she moseyed back and browsed a copy on her next break, purchased one when she got off shift, has finished reading it cover to cover, and has since purchased the Firefly DVD set. Mystery: How much would you give to know what Mona Lisa was thinking about when she smiled that smile?

But it sounds like Eichinger is referring to the glossary's English that Joss and the writers got translated into Chinese (that's certainly funny stuff). At least I would hope my actual essay doesn't deserve irony quotes.

Now that you mention it, I don't hate the cover so much. Although I doubt most people making a cursory glance at the cover do catch that sideline, it certainly does mitigate the L.-Ron-Hubbardness of it.
I've just gotten through the essay on Sawney Beane. Now I'm thinking the Reavers are a tool of Blue Sun! Only five more months left before that theory might be answered...
I'm savoring this book more with each page turning!

Finding Serenity, Finding new converts.
So I ordered my copy of Finding Serenity and the Wonderfalls DVDs. One of my friends saw Finding Serenity "Anti-heroes, Lost shepards and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly," which, with my continual outspoken appreciation of the series led him to bring in two other people and give the show a try. Naturally I show Serenity, and an hour and a half later we're planning when to watch The Train Job. The magic's still there.

I am so happy to find out that was your essay and glossary, Ying (thx, Shiny). Clears up my only complaint about the book. After reading I had gone through the source list thinking, "But. But. But. You left out Ying's Firefly Chinese Pinyinary website. (grumble grumble)." So I'm relieved to find out it was a case of the author being modest rather than the author neglecting to cite the most complete online reference for Firefly translations.

Well the site still says 11-14 days before dispatch, so maybe they're just sending out pre-orders.
I want a copy but will wait and see if somehow I find it in a bookstore first. Highly doubt it though.

Hey, folks:
We're coming up on the end of first week sales (Friday the 8th of April). Anybody know where to find the sales rankings for literary releases? How long does it take to tabulate first-week sales figures? (NB: Writers or literary agent-types, R.S.V.P.)
I'm really interested in following this book's performance in the first few weeks of publication, and a running tally for total sales worldwide, right up through Serenity's theatrical run. Those results should be indicative of the effect the Browncoat Faithful will have on the movie's performance.
Just remember, the book is not a major release. If it 'charts', it will be almost entirely due to sales to Browncoats/Whedonites. Nobody else is gonna know, due to lack of promotion for the book (except by us). The movie should get at least some advance promotion by Universal, so we won't be going it alone there.
But if the book does in fact 'chart', it will be an undeniable indicator that there are enough Browncoats around to make the BDM a success, even if only a less-than-average number of casual moviegoers ever buy a ticket. By successful, I mean at least $60 million box office and a couple hundred thousand DVD's sold.
That'll get the sequels made. "I call that a win."

well, mine does *lol* curious for how long it will keep saying that. only once before did i have a problem like that with amazon. first it took forever, then it changed to 1-2 weeks, later to 3-5 weeks and finally to "sorry, we dont have that" *sigh*
