While I haven't read the whole book yet, I'd have to agree that Ms. Lackey's treatise is the most spot-on with how I felt about the show. She and I reached many of the same conclusions (with the exception of Book).
And while I'd debate KRAD over some of the exceptions he took with TTJ, I agree with him that it was not a proper introduction to Firefly. F*x screwed the pooch when they didn't air the 2-hour pilot first, as intended.
KRAD: And I wouldn't have cut a thing from the pilot. Kaylee's stealthy stroll into the kitchen before eating her strawberry, heightened the sense of 'What's in the box? Drugs? Blood diamonds?', for me. Since we already knew Kaylee by the time the F*xheads got around to showing us Serenity Pt. 1 & 2, I was kinda suspecting vintage Pokemon cards... In retrospect, we know it was only a strawberry, that made Kaylee purr throatily, "Grampa!"; but when we first viewed the episode that box could have contained anything.
I'd have plunked down good money to see the pilot in a theater. You know, spruce up the production values a little; but otherwise, movie-quality story, characters, pacing and acting talent.
So, I guess that's what I'll be doing after all, this September 30th...

Consolidating several threads that I hope most readers are familiar with: Jewel Staite is an incredible actress. The intricacies of her character, Kaylee, are the proof in that pudding. As a young actress in her first network series -- having graduated from Nickelodeon -- it cannot have been easy to do rear (dorsal?) nudity and a rather explicit sex scene, then come out of it smiling like your favorite aunt, then skip a beat and go into technical mode to explain to the dumb boys about the intricacies of an engine. All in one scene! I was gobsmacked with that OoG scene. And all of her other work on the show did nothing to dispel that impression. She flawlessly pulled off a wide range of facial and bodily expressions of emotion (think of the rape-threat scene in OiS, or her 'flirt with me' flip to a 'you're a jackass' dismount with Simon in "The Message"). If Orson Scott Card didn't 'get it', he's a moron. Then she shows up unannounced at a casual Firefly fan get-together in Vancouver, like a regular Flan, to enjoy some Firefly with friends (and perhaps, just a little, to bask in some well-deserved glow).
It's official: I think the world of her.

I ended up going this weekend to a B&N and found they didn't have it in stock. I checked with an employee there who looked it up in their system finding a number of stores here, in the Atlanta area, for which basically the system said "call for availability". NONE of the stores had it. I'm still looking for my copy which I guess I'll probably end up ordering online, but I'm please to see that it looks like it was ordered by these stores and hopefully sold out. Good sign, I hope.

Looked in BN in Glendale on Friday night, thinking I could get a copy before the Meetup on Saturday. No joy. The clerk had not heard of it. He found it in the computer after we played 21 questions. But we couldn't find it on the shelves.
Anyway the postman delivered it Saturday before I left for Meetup, Shiny.
Have only read a few essays, out of order. I'm loving it. The last article at the end, by Jewel, is great. The article on possible Reaver predecessors is creapy, I liked it.

Finding Serenity is great. The Chinese translation "essay" is worth the price alone. Seems there are some seriously messed up people over there at Mutant Enemy to come up with this stuff. :) :)

Just to add an English point of view - I'd preordered from Amazon.co.uk which gave me an estimated dispatch date of 31st March. Checked back on 1st April to see whether it had shipped and they'd suddenly announced it was "limited availability" (just checked again as I'm writing this and it now says dispatched in 1-2 weeks).
Anyhow, as I'm off for a quick trip to New York on Sunday I decided to cancel the order and hope to pick one up there.

Can anybody say "New York Times Bestseller"? I knew that'cha could. Y'all just keep on buying this book. I promise it's a worthwhile read (even the parts I've disagreed with are interesting) and it would be way cool to push a book about a series cancelled 2 years ago made into a movie that won't come out for another six months, into a bestseller. That'll have The Money scratching its collective pointy little skulls... Gotta fight the power, 'coz who else is going to?

I picked up this book last night as the local Barnes & Nobel did not have a single copy until late yesterday. Luckily one of my converts works there and has been waiting on this book. When she opened the box and found them, she called me at work to let me know she had them in finally.
I have not been able to put the book down since I picked it up. I was up late last night reading, and can't wait for lunchtime to read it some more. The book is staring at me from the corner of my desk now, calling my name.
