1) Exactly, "He ain't no shepard."
2) I thought it was 'bar' fight. Square fights have rules. In a square fight a good big man always beats a good small man. Jayne is a lot bigger.
3) Mal is just a man and he hasn't met Riker. Nobody likes Riker though. They never developed the character's personality enough. I like that he was able to fit in on a Klingon ship though.
4) The Zoe issue is settled.
5) If bar fights include blasters, Han has a better chance. No guns, Mal wins.
6) Archer seems pretty tough and resourceful. He's gone up against that genetically enhanced Souliban leader and done OK. The character shouldn't be underestimated.
7) Harry Callahan (no points for spelling) is a tough hombre. Mal has a chance but, gotta go rewatch some Dirty Harry movies. He has a tendeny to pull things out even after taking a beating.
What about Mal vs. Josey Wales?
8) Some one pointed out that if it came to a quick draw Maverick would win. They're right about that, but what I said earlier still stands.
9 & 10) Just to save time. Probably unfairly, haven't seen 24 (it's on a workout day. What about Was vs. Elvis?
11) Kirk in his prime up to his 40's.

I must confess that "who's tougher", "who'd win a bar fight" and "who'd win a square fight" are three different questions.

Sigh, I guess I've complicated things.

2) By square fight I just met "not a surprise attack." I was referring to the way Mal surprised Jayne with a wrench.

3)It's true, I want Mal to win over Riker 'cuz I like Mal so much better. Didn't Riker and Warf fight over Deanna Troi? I can't remember. But you are sure that Riker has NEVER lost a fight? Damn, it just seems unfair to Mal.

5) Do you think Han is faster on the draw and a better shot?

6) I really wish they had chosen another actor to play Archer, then I'd be more inclined to agree with you.

7)Josie Wales has my vote

8)No contest

9)You might like 24. I know season 1 is out on DVD. It's no Firefly, but the realtime story is a cool concept.

10. Kirk has a mean roundhouse.

THANKS for your comments, I am enjoying this thread.

Barfight? Hmmm...
Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal, Mal.
Face it, in a barfight Mal can kick anyone's ass.

Mal vs. Riker--

IMO, this all depends on the situation and the backup. Fighting over Troi, Riker would win. Cos, Mal, I just don't see him getting worked up over her. Fighting over Inara, Mal would win. Cos Inara would bat her eyes coquettishly and Riker would get distracted, cos he's kind of a gland like that, and wham- Mal wins. Very much like Mal beat Atherton. Now, in a straight bar fight, you have to consider the backup. And this is fisticuffs--weapons aren't interchangable. None of The Intrepid Crew of Serenity could beat Data. But Mal, Jayne, and Zoe could beat Riker and Worf.

Ooh! Here's a new one:

Zoe vs. K'ehlar (at least, I think that's how it's spelled)
- I think that straight fight no weapons, Zoe would win. K'ehlar would fight honorable, but Zoe flings dirt in peoples' eyes.

Wash vs. Elvis
- Pre War Stories, I might go with Elvis. But after War Stories, I think Wash.

I think this topic could lead to a good video game.

Hey Sarahetc?
I'm having a drink in your honor. You are a great writer and also Tag Liner. Unless you go Kirk on us, Serenity will keep flying.

I feel I must add to Sensou that Mal would not win every bar fight. His strongest ability is not physical fighting. Jayne got on his case in "Serenity" because Mal kept backing down.

In "Shingdig" he tells Inara, "I never run from a fight" and she answers something like, "Yes you do all the time..."

I know Mal is very very tough. He is like Maverick in many ways. But he knows his limits.

Succatash your right. Mal can't win every bar fight, and he knows that, eventhough he'll start one no matter what the odds on Alliance Day (or whatever they call it). Otherwise Mal is shown to be very realistic about fighting, especially in the life and death situations. In War Stories Zoe tells Wash and Jayne to hold their fire... "This is something Cap'n is gonna want to finish for himself."
Mal says,"No! No it isn't." And they thoroughly perforate his opponent.

How would Jubal Early fare against some of this competition. I felt that if the series continued that he might've popped-up again.
I never thought of Maverick as so tough, maybe because those movies were so light-hearted.

I heard rumors that he was planned to come back, maybe he'll be in the 3 unseen episodes.

Early is a living weapon, super human. He would win over all above mentioned.

One question sticks in my mind...how come River never woke Jayne?

Hey Succatash!

What drink? My personal drink of choice is a Tanqueray martini, dry, slightly dirty, straight up, with olives.

I'll go ahead and dedicate the last half of this frosty to you.

And thanks for the compliments. Glad you like the stories. I like writing them.

And I am fixin' to go Kirk. Just probably not around here.
