Excellent ideas for another great story. I have one comment though I dontthink they would be able to take over the ship with everyone on board.

Who wouldn't be able to take over a ship with everyone on board? Reavers?
My take on Reavers is that that is precisely what the do - come on board, kill everyone, take some losses and replace those with what few survivors are left. It would be rare that even a distress call woul dbe sent except by the Reavers after the fact to lure other ships in.
My input was following this logic, stepping on from what was initially suggested:
Some colonists are split up. Group A stays behind only to find out that Group B went on in precisely the direction into space they argued and split over in the first place - a path taking them close to Reaver space.
Group A hires Serenity to take them along the path knowing, but not mentioning, the potential plight of Group B. The distress is picked up, Serenity goes in and surprises the Reavers in the process. A rescue is reluctantly mounted and in the boarding battle, Dann is severly injured and eventually dies.
Al that is set against the back drop of Dann being a colonist, Kaylee being a former colonist, and the triangle betwee them and Simon.
I think that would make a great story.

I thought you where saying that the villagers take controll of the ship to hunt reavers. I found that a bit far fetched but this is better. I do think the reavers could take controll.
