Tesla applied for a permit to run 5,000 driverless "Robotaxis" in Nevada—which is hilarious considering 5,000 is literally 1,000 more than all existing human taxi permits in Las Vegas combined.
Regulators took one look at the application, laughed and capped them at 10 cars. Capped at 45 mph. Confined to a small stretch of the Strip. No airport pickups.
Tesla's "Level 4 self-certification" stunt in deregulation states like Texas and Florida is looking increasingly like a complete farce.
The moment Tesla has to present actual proof of driverless safety to regulators who care, the delusion falls apart. Asking for more cars than the entire Vegas taxi industry while unable to clear basic safety standards isn't a scaling strategy—it's PR theatre and a stock pump.
The real-world gap remains embarrassing:
• Waymo: Over 3,000 fully driverless vehicles operating commercially across major metros.
• Tesla: Roughly 20 active unsupervised cars nationwide.
Tesla asking for 5,000 permits when they can barely run 20 cars shows just how detached from reality the narrative is.
But sure, "full self-driving next year"—for the 10th year in a row.
Of note, I saw a CyberCab in Seattle today. It came with a full cockpit with steering wheel and more, fully supervised.

None of what we have seen and thought about Musk can fully ready us for what the filmmaker has done here — an adventurous but methodical movie grounded in the thesis that, as he sees it, a dangerous huckster is stealthily aggregating power to exploit us, primarily by centralizing and controlling massive amounts of data. Gibney’s basic take on Musk is that he’s a confidence man whose power comes only from the stock market and disappears the minute we see through the facade of sales pitches — but can do a whole lot of damage until that happens.
The film world-premieres Sept. 8 at Venice. But its cultural reach will likely extend far beyond that. Musk stands poised to touch off a fresh wave of anger and fear among the millions already inclined to worry about him, into and well after the midterms, while fueling a whole lot of trollishness (and worse?) from the many who worship at the temple of Elon Musk, including Elon Musk. . . .
