Amazing.

Not a parody, a tribute*
Reninds me of what Firefly could have become with that amazing cast.

*But they have to call it parody to not run afoul of copyright.

She's the hero of this song. And he knows it.

The singer is sleepwalking through life while in awe of this woman who does what she wants to do on her path to self-enlightenment. He can't even begin to grasp how she's capable of so much, so fearlessly because he isn't even equipped with the tools to break free of his own mental chains and isn't thinking on the same level as she does.

But he knows all this. Even if he's powerless to do anything about it. And it terrifies him because he doesn't even understand why she would continue to waste any of her time on him because of it.

All he can do is hope that Heaven really is overrated.

...

I do find it curious how the perspective changes throughout the song.

"She's back", as if narrating the backstory for the listener before addressing her directly as "You're back" leading up through the chorus and going back to "Her" and then switching back again.

There's a lot of underlying spite in the lyrics. I get the sense that one half of the song was him preparing what he wanted to say to her, and the other half is a one-sided conversation he had alone to himself, perhaps in a mirror, which he never actually dared have with her.

When he talks about "She" and "Her", it's with a sort of reverence... She reminds him that there is Time to Change and that there is Room to Grow. There's also a great deal of self-realization and brutal honestly with himself. But he says none of that to her when it's "You" and "Your". It's almost nothing but questions out of him when the perception shifts. And honestly, even though they make for beautiful lyrics when sung with the talent on display, they're pretty fucking shitty questions.

And probably... at least what I would assume were most women's favorite lines in the bridge toward the end of the song aren't actually romantic. They're pathetic.

Can you imagine your love, pride, deep-fried chicken?
Your best friend always sticking up for you
Even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine your first dance, freeze dried romance?
Five-hour phone conversation, the best soy latte that you ever had
And me

He's bargaining. Or at least he is making an attempt to. And if she truly is this amazing and still finds time to come back to him, it's petty and without purpose too. Not only because they are all words that needn't be spoken aloud if they were true, but in my entire life I've only ever witnessed one single relationship where that type of behavior persisted through decades, comes off as genuine as anything genuine I've ever seen before and still goes strong to this day. In other words, I don't believe any of it. It may have been how the relationship started out and it persisted for a while, but if that really kept up with the same enthusiasm every day up until now, she never would have thought of leaving him in the first place.

And if that is the case, there's never any going back. It's only doing it because you know it's what you have to do now, and not because you love to do it like you once did so effortlessly when the relationship was new and exciting. And I get the sense that if she also tried to make it work it would be twice as much work for her now that she's seen what other opportunities there are out there for her. And, incidentally, I do believe that "Did Venus blow your mind?" was a question about a lesbian relationship that she had while she was out there exploring the universe.

It would be interesting to find out it was a real woman that he felt exactly this way for. What a cool and unique way to express your feelings to somebody which are usually a kind that most folk would never express to somebody they felt strongly for out of fear of having questions answered that should never have been asked in the first place.
