During the Korean War, Lyndon B. Johnson aggressively investigated military spending. Today, similar oversight is conspicuously absent.

Decades ago, with the Korean War raging, Texas Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson wanted to know just how much money was being spent in America’s latest round of fighting and just who was spending it. As chair of the Senate Preparedness Subcommittee, Johnson corralled officials and defense firms alike, trying to determine how efficient spending was. He was, as Newsweek dubbed him, America’s “Watchdog-in-Chief.”
How times have changed. In 2026, the United States is once more at war abroad, spending billions of taxpayer dollars to fight a distant foe. But this time we lack rigorous oversight, energetic Senate committees and, by all appearances, any serious efforts to check whether or how America’s defense expenditures are being spent for American interests. Instead of a watchdog, we have Americans watching how officials and their family members have turned the American defense sector into an opportunity to profit — and have opened up new spigots of corruption in the process.
Just look at some of the examples that spilled out recently. Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s broker at Morgan Stanley tried to “make a big investment in major defense companies” in the weeks leading up to the war in Iran. We’re not talking pocket change. As the report detailed, this was a potential “multimillion-dollar investment” in America’s defense sector — all for someone who had an inside idea whether war was coming or not.
Hegseth has denied any involvement in the attempted investment. But he is hardly alone when it comes to administration officials and their inner circles profiting from these kinds of networks. A few months ago, we learned that a venture capital firm linked to Donald Trump Jr., 1789 Capital, had backed companies that landed tens of millions of dollars in contracts from his father’s administration. One start-up backed by Trump Jr.’s firm even received a $620 million loan from the Department of Defense’s Office of Strategic Capital — reportedly the largest loan that office had ever provided.
Trump Jr. has admitted that he and the firm “understand what the administration wants to do, because we helped craft some of the messaging.” He has claimed that his firm is dedicated to something called “patriotic capitalism.” Given the tangled finances — and the clear mixing of public and private interests — another term is more appropriate: corruption.
These are but two examples, but the list runs on and on. There’s Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and envoy for Iran negotiations, who has taken in billions of dollars from Iran’s foes in recent years — including from Saudi Arabia, who directly lobbied the administration to wage its war in Iran. There’s even Trump himself, who is the “chief crypto advocate” for a crypto firm controlled by his family that took in hundreds of millions of dollars from the United Arab Emirates, an unprecedented case of a foreign dictatorship directly bankrolling a sitting president — and opening up all kinds of national security concerns in the process.
At a certain point, the list becomes overwhelming. But it also opens a door for potential reformers, for future campaigners and for any and all trying to highlight just how far this rot of corruption has seeped into Washington — and how we’re all now beginning to pay a price for it. Because corruption isn’t simply about personal enrichment or how public officials can steer po

Pope Leo tells NBC News he has 'no fear' after Trump labels him 'weak' and 'terrible' in feud over Iran war
The first American pontiff vowed Monday to keep up his appeals for peace, which he said were rooted in the gospel.

The American Trumptards cannot wrap their minds around the concept of forbidden behavior. They see sin and say, "Why can't I do what I want? Isn't doing what is pleasurable without limits the very basis of America's freedom?" The Pope is so unfair to Trumptards when he lectures them on the incomprehensible and abstract (to Trumptards) concept of limits required for decency, which Trumptards violate habitually.

The Fundamental, Misunderstood Strength of America’s Military
By Myke Cole | April 13, 2026

p-bragging-problem.html
Our armed forces are now helmed by a secretary of defense whose ideology has directly framed American military power in the term of a “crusade.” He exemplifies this ethos with his pride in his Jerusalem cross tattoo, and his tattoo of the Latin Deus Vult (“God wills it”), both symbols of Crusader power that have no place in our military. This is coupled with Trump’s promises to “bomb them into the Stone Ages, where they belong,” and otherwise threatening to target civilian infrastructure even though such strikes could be construed as war crimes. Trump’s juvenile, trollish renaming of the Department of Defense to the Department of War is the icing on this self-conscious cake. Or, it would be if we didn’t have so many cringe-inducing comments from Hegseth, such as: “maximum lethality, not tepid legality.” His famous dressing-down of his senior staff, actual quiet professionals, should be considered at some length:
"We fight to win. We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don’t fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement, just common sense, maximum lethality and authority for warfighters. … You kill people and break things for a living. You are not politically correct and don’t necessarily belong always in polite society."
This is not how American senior military leaders are trained to talk.

Yhis has got to be the most counterproductive war in US history.
"Before“ ... that is, before Netwnyahu blackmailed Trump into starting a war with Iran ... Iran had promised not to build a nuclear weapon, it was being inspected by the IAEA, oil was flowing freely thru the Straits and paid for in dollars, the Gulf States were positioned as glitzy (if totally artificial and corrupt) centers of petrodollar finance, and Israel was able to continue its aggressive expansion.
Now Trump and Netanyahu are finding out that Iran is holding the biggest cards... oil shipment, the world economy, and the petrodollar.
