Things really hit the fan earlier today after Iran’s largest natural gas field, the South Pars, was struck by Israel. This field reportedly accounts for 75% of Iran’s natural gas production and 80-85% of its electric grid.
This of course came directly after Israel had assassinated Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Council Ali Larijani in a strike that was said to have also killed upwards of 100+ civilians in the vicinity, as it leveled the apartment block he was in, and possibly even surrounding buildings.
This led to Iran immediately escalating with strikes against energy targets in both Israel and the Gulf, particularly hitting Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas hub said to be the world’s largest:

The strike was successful and was said to have done massive damage to the facility, which some experts are writing is irreparable.

Earlier this week, Donald Trump was asked whether he was surprised that no one briefed him in advance that Iran might respond to an American attack by targeting Gulf countries. His response? “Nobody. Nobody. No no no.”
That is evidence that either Trump is lying or his administration has so cut itself off from experts that no one briefed him on what was essentially common wisdom among US experts – that major strikes on Iran could prompt Tehran to respond by targeting oil infrastructure and US bases across the Middle East and closing the Strait of Hormuz.
For the past 15 years, I’ve participated in and helped run scenario exercises and war games on Iran both at the Pentagon and then outside of government. These exercises are not about predicting the future with certainty. They are about understanding the possible consequences of choices.
And on Iran, the lessons from these exercises were remarkably consistent and quite similar to what we’ve seen play out over the past two weeks. Here are five things Trump should have known and would have known if his administration had listened to experts:
1. When the regime feels existentially threatened, Iran will escalate
In most war games, conflicts began at a lower level: an Israeli strike, a proxy attack, a miscalculation. At that stage, Iran usually calibrated its response. It retaliated, but tried to avoid drawing the United States fully into the conflict because it knew that a full-on war with the US represented a massive threat. That pattern held in real life during the Israel-Iran exchanges of 2024 and 2025.
But once the United States entered directly, and once the regime believed its survival was at stake, those restraints would disappear.
At that point, Iran’s playbook was well understood: strike US bases, harass shipping in the Gulf, activate proxy forces across the region, and target oil infrastructure and civilian assets. The goal was to impose costs, spike oil prices, and create international pressure on Washington to stop.
This was not hard to foresee. It was one of the most consistent conclusions in the exercises I saw. What we are watching now was entirely predictable.
2. It is easy to close the Strait of Hormuz. It is hard to reopen it

The United States made war on three continents over three days earlier this month, conducting attacks in Africa, Asia, and South America. During that span, the U.S. also struck a civilian boat in the Pacific Ocean. The globe-spanning scope of the attacks represents one of the few instances since World War II that the United States has been simultaneously involved in armed conflicts with such a wide geographic sweep.
The attacks in Ecuador, Iran, Somalia, and the Eastern Pacific from March 6 through March 8 are part of President Donald Trump’s escalating world war against variously defined “terrorists.” They highlight the administration’s increasing willingness to use the U.S. military as a solution to almost any perceived geopolitical problem.
“All war. All the time. Everywhere,” said Brian Finucane, a former State Department lawyer and specialist in counterterrorism issues and the laws of war, of the wide-ranging attacks over just a few days. “It’s unprecedented given the absence of any fresh congressional authorization.”
This month, Trump has repeatedly referenced his relentless war-making and even lamented it on occasion. “I built the military and rebuilt it in my first term, and we’re using it more than I’d like to use it to be honest with you,” he said.
The region that has seen the most profound increases in this “use” of military power is the Western Hemisphere as part of what Trump and others have called the “Donroe Doctrine.” This bastardization of the 1823 Monroe Doctrine — a unilaterally claimed license to militarily meddle in America’s backyard — has led to attacks on civilian boats in the waters surrounding Latin America and an attack on Venezuela. The most recent location of U.S. attacks in the region, Ecuador, is also the site of the first strike in Trump’s recent three-day, three-war spree.
“Yes — as @POTUS has said — we are bombing Narco Terrorists on land as well,” self-styled Secretary of War Pete Hegseth wrote on X on March 6, announcing a new strike in Ecuador. Days later, in a war powers report announcing the introduction of U.S. armed forces into “hostilities” in that country, the White House informed Congress of “military action taken on March 6, 2026, against the facilities of narco-terrorists affiliated with a designated terrorist organization.”
The next day, Trump announced an escalation of his latest war of choice in the Middle East. “Today Iran will be hit very hard!” he posted, writing, “Under serious consideration for complete destruction and certain death, because of Iran’s bad behavior, are areas and groups of people that were not considered for targeting up until this moment in time.” That same day, U.S. Central Command posted footage of the U.S. striking unspecified Iranian targets beneath a threat by Hegseth to hunt and kill those that “threaten Americans anywhere on earth.”
A day later, the U.S. conducted an attack as part of its war-on-terror-holdover conflict in Somalia. “In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted an airstrike targeting ISIS-Somalia on March 8, 2026,” reads an AFRICOM press release. “The airstrike occurred in the vicinity of the Golis Mountains.” (This frequently attacked region was the site, last year, of what a top Navy admiral called the “largest airstrike in the history of the world.”)

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the Pentagon would ask Congress for $200 billion to purchase more ammo for Trump's war on Iran. The reported $200 billion figure "could move." Hegseth means "will increase." He explained where the money is going: "Obviously it takes money to kill bad guys, so we're going back to Congress and our folks there to ensure that we're properly funded for what's been done, for what we may have to do in the future, ensure that our ammunition is refilled, and not just refilled, but above and beyond."

This piece is one that I have hated writing. Certain pieces I get excited about, certain ones get me angry, some actually make me happy. But this one is one of the few that I have felt depressed while writing. This is because what I believe we are seeing in the US/Israeli attack on Iran, if you step back and consider it, indicates a massive relative decline in US capabilities and strategic choices in the Western Pacific. Part of this is self-inflicted, as a group of strategic incompetents has weakened the US internationally and continues to degrade its institutions. Part of this has nothing to do with the US in particular, but is because of changes in military technology and relative production. However the overall meaning is clear. The US, if it cannot fight an already militarily degraded Iran effectively, has no chance to oppose China in the western Pacific or to defend Taiwan or even Japan for any period of time. It lacks the capabilities, skills, strategic mindset and military thinking for such a fight and the Chinese would be able to produce a military force that would exceed Iranian capabilities in terms of quality and mass by a factor almost too large to contemplate.

Do you want to know how I know that Trump isn't meeting his goals? Because he's JUST NOW mobilizing ground forces to the Mideast.
Last time we had boots on the ground in the Mideast, it took six months to dick around "negotiating" with Saddam (while we endlessly moved goalposts), convince the American people that he was an IMMINENT THREAT to the USA (aluminum tubes! Yellowcake! 9-11! Mushroom cloud! Anthrax!) and - most importantly- stage 500,000 troops, weapons, and materiel for a massive invasion.
Clearly, the Trump administration had no Plan B in place. Just like in Ukraine, they assumed instant success.

I think you're still viewing this through the lens of Trump being like any other status-quo politician who's served as President since the end of WWII, and I don't believe that Trump has ever gone into anything without a Plan B in place.
He's telling people what he wants to tell them right now. We already know that a large portion of the Legacy Media is unabashedly anti-American, and it makes no sense for him to let them know what he's doing ahead of time so the enemy can be warned ahead of time.
That's why I posted his interaction with Japan just yesterday. I loved how they asked him why he didn't discuss what he was going to do with his allies, such as Japan, before making any moves and he asked them why they didn't tell us about their intention of striking Pearl Harbor before they did it. (And I also stated that I wouldn't be surprised if they rehearsed that interaction before the "show" started... Not because I like to hear myself speak, but because I honestly believe that wasn't an off the cuff moment and it was planned).
Hell... I don't believe that anybody, including us, including the media, including the so-called "experts" even really know what his end-game is right now, let alone what he is going to do 30 minutes from now.
Everybody loves to open up their big fucking mouths and speak their piece about everything, especially when there is ad-revenue to make from 24/7 editorialism and click-bait, but nobody really knows.
It's largely why I've decided I'm going to stop posting much about politics in here, simply because it's pointless. The day-to-day bullshit is pointless. I have enough real life things to worry and think about, and I don't feel like getting into the trenches with Tweddle Dee and Tweddle Dumb here every day and continue to bang my head against the wall of their combined stupidity.
You guys have been talking about Russia/Ukraine for over 4 years and for what, right?

Well, maybe he's got those 2,500 Marines steaming from Japan to kidnap Iran's President Pezeshkian (who is pro-western and could very well be an Israeli plant) and form a "government in exile", where he can wave his arms and tell the IRGC and Iranian army to do this, that, and the other.
Iranians will ignore him.
