Three years ago, AMC theaters announced one of the company’s worst ideas of all time. The proposed system, called “Sightline pricing,” raised ticket prices only for the best seats in the auditorium—the ones right in the center of the movie theater. Naturally, the idea was met with the sheer derision that it deserved. Everyone hated it, and AMC cancelled the idea within a few months.
"What if movie theaters worked like airplanes?" was certainly a pitch that would eventually find a way to seat the lower-income theatergoers by the bathroom, or worse. But I only called Sightline pricing one of AMC’s worst ideas of all time because the theater chain just came up with a new plan so terrible that Nicole Kidman couldn't even tell us where the magic of the AMC theater experience went now.
According to AMC CEO Adam Aron, the best seats in the house won’t even be available for purchase anymore unless you’re an A-List or Stubs Premiere member. Forget higher fees—that child’s play. Now, if you don’t cough up $19.99-27.99 (per month!) to become an AMC member, you won’t even have access to those seats at all.
... What?!
Maybe I’m misunderstanding what AMC is suggesting here. Surely, the company wouldn’t seek to punish the average movie-goer by making non-members feel like second-class citizens, right? There’s no way the theater chain that allows members to skip the popcorn line like TSA PreCheck would make everyone else who can’t afford the monthly fees feel even worse for simply wanting to grab their kids some snacks before Bluey: The Movie starts, would they? Let’s hear exactly how Aron described it.
“AMC will introduce preferred premier seating, where we will block and reserve the best seats in the house in our theaters to be accessed first by our A-List and our Stubs Premiere members—that’s the two VIP tiers within our Stubs program—at no added charge,” the AMC CEO said during an earning’s call on Tuesday. “At AMC, we will assure that the best seats in our auditoriums are [held]—at first, anyway—for our best customers. We think it will be a considerable consumer benefit that our most frequent guests will notice and greatly appreciate, further cementing their brand loyalty to AMC.”

It's just about done now, but in 60 days it's made $361 Million worldwide on a $35 Million budget.
There's no way I'm going back and tracking it like I did back in '23, but I think you'll be pretty hard-pressed to come up with a top 5 list of movies who made back more than 10x their BP like The Housemaid did.

Modern Usage (Negative/Pejorative): Used by critics to describe what they perceive as performative activism, extreme political correctness, or "cancel culture".
In the movie Housemaid, the housemaid and the housewife kill the philandering husband. The movie could have the housemaid and housewife make picket signs with rude messages about the husband, but killing hubby is a more cinematic version of "cancel culture". What is cancel culture? Cancel culture refers to the widespread, community-driven practice of withdrawing support (or "canceling") for public figures, companies, or individuals after they have done or said something deemed objectionable, offensive, or immoral. Hollywood loves the counterintuitive idea of vigilante justice (killing hubby) to protest hubby's immoral acts, making the movie simultaneously woke and entertaining to women who have bad husbands.

A traditional studio spreads risk across multiple titles, and the hits compensate for the flops. But this is film releasing with a tech-like mindset in which all risk is minimized – and real creativity with it. For proof, simply count up Paramount’s Oscar nominations this year. Or rather don’t count them, because they’re the only studio that got zero.
When you treat cinema like the entertainment equivalent of the iPhone – every franchise offers iteration after iteration of the same tired old product, finessed just enough to keep the suckers queuing – only shareholders are being well-served. If a studio’s merely one asset among many in a corporate portfolio, it’s unlikely to try making another Titanic any time soon.
When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox for $71.3bn at the end of the last decade, assurances were made that both studios would keep plugging away much the same as before, but what actually happened was the rebranded Fox, now known as 20th Century Pictures, raided its own back catalogue for remake material. So we got more Avatar, Alien, Predator and Planet of the Apes.
Traditionally in Hollywood, the power was wielded by the so-called Majors – Universal, Warner Bros, Disney, Sony and Paramount, plus Fox and MGM before their respective absorptions. Yet there were enough of them to generate the sort of multi-directional cut-and-thrust that made taking regular creative big swings not just commendable, but necessary. But if you don’t have competitors, there’s no reason to compete. What the merger brings us closer to is an age of popular cinema as endless content churn: two or three conglomerates cycling through their respective IP hoards.
Imagine it’s the summer of 2029. You decide to go to the cinema, and there are two choices on offer. Both have been made to appeal to the broadest global audience imaginable, and both are essentially just updated versions of films you saw in the summer of 2027. Whether you see one, both or neither, the cumulative good to your soul will be nil.

Andy Weir Reveals What He Learned Between The Martian and Project Hail Mary Movie Adaptations (Exclusive)
"Movie theaters now really have to compete against the comfort of your couch," the author says

Andy Weir is an established writer, but he’s also spent a lot of time making movies.
The author, 53, has two movie adaptations under his belt. First there’s The Martian, a 2015 movie by Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon, based on his 2011 novel of the same name. And then there’s Project Hail Mary, based on his 2021 book, which stars Ryan Gosling and just hit theaters Friday, March 20.
When asked about what he’s learned in the 11 years that have passed, he says that the "whole industry has changed a lot."
"In a lot of ways, cinema is struggling because it used to be that the only way to get a cinematic experience was to go to the movies,” Weir says. But now, people can watch movies at home with equipment that mimics that movie-going experience, such as large screens and home theater systems.
"Movie theaters now really have to compete against the comfort of your couch," he says.
The Martian, also starring Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels, grossed over $630 million at the box office worldwide. The movie about an astronaut's struggle to survive after being left behind in space while on a mission was a hit among critics, earning seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Damon.
Weir currently has his sights set on the release of the Project Hail Mary movie adaptation. The flick, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, follows science teacher Ryland (Gosling) as he wakes up in space on a mission to save humanity. There, he meets a rock-like alien named Rocky and they form an unexpected friendship.
The script was written by Drew Goddard, who also adapted The Martian, with producing by Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller and Weir.
Weir talks about how improved technology in movie theaters will have a special effect on viewers, saying, "There’s a sequence where Rocky and Ryland have to get a sample of Planet Adrian's atmosphere — that is a visual extravaganza."
"To be able to see that occupying your entire field of view in an IMAX theater or something like that is a very different experience than just watching it on your TV," he adds.
“It’s immersive, and that’s what cinema has left to offer,” Weir says.
The author says he played a crucial role in production as the "science guy" on set.
“My role was just constant fact-checking, both real facts and made-up facts. They would ask me detailed questions about astrophage, taumoeba and the Eridian biology, stuff like that,” he says, referring to the science presented in his book.
"It was like walking around all these huge sound stages with all these practical sets and looking at all the cool stuff and then being punctuated by random math problems, which for me is heaven," Weir continues.
Weir also worked one-on-one with Gosling to develop his character.
"I would meet with Ryan pretty much every morning and he would talk about like, ‘Okay, here are the scenes we're shooting today, what's Ryland thinking and feeling at this time? What is he going for?’ He was interested in my input which made me feel important," he says.
Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz and Lionel Boyce join Gosling in the cast.
