Mars on Hold? Elon Musk Pivots to 'Self-Growing' City on the Moon

As millions tuned in to the Super Bowl on Sunday night, Musk tweeted, "For those unaware, SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years."
It's a change from last year, when he posted: "No, we’re going straight to Mars. The Moon is a distraction."
"Mars will start in 5 or 6 years," Musk later wrote in another tweet, "so will be done in parallel with the Moon, but the Moon will be the initial focus."
Musk also insists he isn’t abandoning his Mars ambitions. “We will still do Mars in parallel, but the critical path to a self-growing Moon city is faster,” he wrote in a follow-up tweet. “The Moon city can be made to be self-growing in less than half the time of Mars.”

There are reasons to doubt Musk’s sanity or conclude he is only a cocaine sniffing, super salesman bamboozling the government and the stock market for his companies rather than a visionary creator. SpaceX doesn’t create any of a million things, other than transportation, necessary for space.

Tesla ‘Robotaxi’ status check: 8 months in and all of Musk’s promises are lies

Tesla launched its “Robotaxi” service in Austin eight months ago. In that time, Elon Musk promised 500 cars in Austin, coverage for half the US population, fully unsupervised rides, and expansion to 8-10 cities, all by the end of 2025. None of it happened.
Today, the service has roughly 42 cars in Austin, availability below 20%, a crash rate 9 times worse than human drivers.
On January 22, 2026, less than a week before Tesla’s Q4 earnings call, Musk finally announced that Tesla had started offering rides without a safety monitor in the car. The stock jumped 4%. But the claim was a lie. Video evidence showed every “unsupervised” ride being followed by chase cars with safety monitors inside.
Crash rate: 9 times worse than humans — with a monitor
Tesla’s own data reported to NHTSA confirms a crash rate roughly 9 times worse than human drivers, and that was with a trained safety monitor in the car.
Nine crashes in approximately 500,000 miles: one crash every 55,000 miles. Human drivers average one police-reported crash every 500,000 miles. The incidents include driving on the wrong side of the road, hitting a cyclist, striking an animal at 27 mph, and requiring emergency intervention at a train crossing.
Tesla redacts the narrative section of every single NHTSA crash report. Waymo, Zoox, and every other AV operator provide full descriptions. Tesla is the only company systematically hiding the details.
Tesla, and especially Elon Musk, are claiming that Tesla is the leader in autonomy and that Waymo is the “rookie.” They have to do that since Tesla’s auto business is in decline and its valuation, worth 300 times earnings, is solely based on the idea that Tesla will somehow catch up to Waymo and then outscale it, despite a complete lack of evidence.

Musk’s posts repeatedly echoed prominent white supremacist narratives and ideologies, said William Braniff, the former director of the Department of Homeland Security’s office for prevention of terrorism and extremism. Several of Musk’s posts included what Braniff described as “textbook examples” of white supremacist conspiracy theories such as “the great replacement” – a belief that liberal elites or Jewish people are conspiring to use immigration to replace white populations.
“If you stripped Elon Musk’s name off of these things and showed them to me, I would think that this was a white supremacist.”

Owners Allege Tesla Misled on Self-Driving

When Tom LoSavio bought his Tesla Model S in 2017, he thought he was buying a car that would one day drive itself.
The retired attorney and self-described early adopter paid more than $100,000 for the luxury sedan, including $8,000 for lifetime access to its most advanced driver-assistance features. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said the hardware in the company’s cars would eventually allow all of its cars to drive themselves.
“My wife and I talked about what a great thing it would be if we could just get in a car and have it drive us places,” LoSavio told The Wall Street Journal.
In the nine years since, LoSavio said it has become clear Tesla took him for a ride. He is the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit that alleges that Tesla charged customers thousands of dollars in pricey upgrades for a product that didn’t, and still doesn’t, exist.
LoSavio alleges Musk and Tesla have made repeated claims that were false about the self-driving capabilities of these vehicles and misled consumers who paid extra because they believed the company’s marketing. His lawsuit is one of several ongoing efforts by Tesla owners looking to hold the company accountable for overpromising and under-delivering on its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) product.
In the Netherlands, a Tesla owner launched a campaign last week to organize European buyers, some who paid thousands for automated-driving technology but still lack access because of local regulations. A law firm in Australia has also assembled a class-action case accusing the company of misleading customers about the cars’ capabilities.
The matter calls into question Musk’s decadelong marketing pitch that Tesla’s autonomous vehicles were just around the corner. That promise kept Tesla’s stock near all-time highs—and with a market cap that exceeds most other automakers combined—even as its share of the electric-vehicle market has eroded.
Tesla and its lawyers didn’t respond to requests to comment.
