"We", the 'viewer' would question. What he's suggesting is disrupting the Simon/Kaylee relationship by using "uncertainty" as the conflict. However, in his idea, the conflict is indirect.

If you mean, "Which character would 'question' if Simon allowed him to die or truthfully couldn't save the man." Then the answer is "everyone on board." Whedon has been adamant about the idea that the show was based on the universe seen through the eyes of the group, and each one sees things differently.

I would say that it's going to have to be thought out a lot more to make and episode out of. Stretching that over an hour will be tough, but it can be done.

Also, the "answer" to the question has to start off clear in your mind when you write it, but then come up with the bits that make it vague. In other words, start off with "yes, Simon really tried to save the guy" but then put the circumstances surrounding everything into question. Or take it the other way (although I think Simon would only kill to protect/save River).

Now, now, I never said the audience should think that Simon deliberately killed his patient. They should think that he may have decided against a procedure that might save him, and rationalized his decision, or something like that. As far as how to establish that... maybe another of the passengers is a med student who's watching Simon and says something to the effect of "why aren't you trying (insert name of procedure)?"

Yeah, that's what I meant. That the question is raise is often enough to keep th eaudience guessing, particularly if Simon has nothing to say as a response.

The hypocratic oath is very touchy in the sense that it is a promise to "do no harm" and if the cal that Simon makes is that action would cause undue harm rather than help, then that is what could be in question. Sometimes doctors have to decide to let patients die because doing anything else just isn't "help".

I like the idea. It could stretch into #8 for an hour because there would be the thrilling actions scenes that make him all hurt and leaky in the first place. It might even take yet another episode for Kaylee for forgive him, especially with the previous scenes of Simon with holding treatment flashing back in her mind (flashbacks take up time too.)

My thoughts exactly.

I'd like to help out on this, but I warn you that I have absolutely NIL experience with creative writing.

One thought is to have Reavers involved-- either they board the ship and the crew barely manages to kill them all ('cuz they can't be driven off) or they try to board, but the crew pulls off some daring stunt that destroys the Reaver ship before they can get aboard. Either way, Dann gets all woundified and I... I mean he... dies tragically for daring to love Kaylee.

How about a situation where:

(A) The Reavers are sacking a ship and Serenity picks up thier distress signal

(B) They must decide wether to help or leave them

(C) The passengers (colonists perhaps?) unaware of the real danger decide to take control of Serenity and change her course to intercept

(D) Serenity's crew attack, kill off the Reavers, only to find out that the ship was the rest of the colonists to who the passengers belong.

(E) Dann is severely injured in the liberation raid and dies

How's that? Just some ideas...
