Man... I knew it would never happen, but I was really hoping to see A3 not even make its production budget back. Looks like, thanks to the international audience, it will be hitting $1 Billion today (it already has, actually, with the uncounted international stuff Monday to Friday).
Ain't no way in hell it's making what it needs to break even though.
This will be the final Avatar movie.
Don't listen to James's bullshit about how he was ready to move on and tell different stories, which has been a story he started telling even before this movie dropped. He had a vision for 12 movies. The fact that you didn't keep showing up to shell out the $2 Billion to $2.5 Billion to keep seeing them broke his heart, and if you know anything about the perfectionist he is, this will eat him alive on the inside for the rest of his life.
It's too much bullshit dude. You can't spend three movies telling the same story without any meaningful story-line progression when the bill for production alone is $1 Billion per movie and counting.
You used to be one of the greats man. But you spent way too long drinking the Kool-Aid all the Yes-Men around you were feeding you, and now you're just a sad old man like Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas before you.
I know you won't have to pay for any of your bullshit out of your own pocket, but this will send ripples out through the rest of your career. Nobody is ever going to give you $1 Billion to make a movie again.
It won't be back to basics for you. At least not right away it won't. You should still have a few reasonable-budget movies ahead of you as long as you don't blow any of them.

I always think back to what could have been with the re-boot of Thundercats. It was one of the few remakes that anybody ever put out which I thought was a great improvement off of the original thing I loved when I grew up.
And they KILLED it.
Because they didn't stay on topic and they put a bunch of bullshit filler and "universe building" in the middle of it. They didn't get the 2 seasons they thought they would get, so we were left with another half-told story and robbed of the conclusion because instead of telling their story in 12 episodes, they gave us 6 episodes of bullshit filler on the side and people tuned out.
Nobody wants to sit through one 3.5 hour long movie, let alone 12 of them.
Really man... What did you think was going to happen?
Did you really believe you could keep working with larger budgets and you were going to have the first movie series that just increased viewership with every release?
Maybe the 80's and 90's version of you could have pulled that off.
Not whatever it is you've become today though.
