"Peace Train" was released in 1971, during the height of the Vietnam War (which ended 1975). America was riven like never before. Mostly older generations, those who fought in WWII and the Korean War, the people who populated political institutions, were pro-Vietnam war.
Mostly younger people, afraid of being drafted (or seeing their friends being drafted) into a war they saw as pointless, were strongly opposed. There were peaceful protests. There were riots. There were bombs set off in ROTC campuses and induction centers. There were Guardsmen sniping peaceful protesters from rooftops. Police were called "pigs". There were many injuries, and some deaths, mostly on the protesters' side.
The antiwar movement spawned a widespread rejection of many societal mores. Drug taking was rampant. The "sexual revolution" took off. Communes were being formed.
THE PEOPLE PROTESTING THEN ARE THE BOOMERS OF TODAY.

I have no desire for peace with these people anymore.

There is zero reason to be nice with any of them.

A year or two later, Cat Stevens released "Morning Has Broken", a Christian hymn written in 1931, about the glory and wonder of creation (however you believe it came about).
Rejoice in every morning, rejoice with every breath. It's a hard thing to do when surrounded by troubles and worries, but important to remember.

In 1978, Cat Stevens converted to Islam, and shortly afterwards changed his name to Yusuf Islam. I thought it was a fashion statement, or that he'd run off to N Africa and become violently anti-American, but he still sings his message of peace.
