A former congressional staffer is accused of staging a fake and self-targeted political attack involving mutilation and derogatory writing on her body.
Natalie Greene, 26, who once worked for Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), faces federal charges of conspiracy and making false statements to law enforcement. Each count carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
“We are deeply saddened by today’s news, and while Natalie is no longer associated with the Congressman’s government office, our thoughts and prayers are with her,” said Paxton Antonucci, a spokesperson for Van Drew’s office. “We hope she’s getting the care she needs.”
Prosecutors say Greene schemed with an unnamed co-conspirator to make it seem as if three men assaulted and bound her with zip ties in an attack supposedly based on her political beliefs.
According to the criminal complaint, the co-conspirator called 911 the night of July 23 and said “three guys” had just attacked them at a nature preserve in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.
“They were attacking her,” they told the 911 operator. “They were like talking about politics and stuff. They were like calling her names.”
“They were like calling her like racist, calling her a whore,” the co-conspirator added.
Local police found Greene on the ground, crying and yelling with her hands and feed tied together and her shirt pulled over her head. She had dozens of cuts on her body, including on her face and chest. Written across her body in black marker were two messages: “Trump Whore” on her stomach and Van Drew “is Racist” on her back.
Greene told police that her alleged attackers addressed her by name, one saying he would kill her if she made any noise and one saying he had a gun. One of the men also cut into her body with a sharp object, she told them, and one or more of the men wrote on her.
But investigators later learned that Greene visited a “scarification artist” and paid $500 in cash for lacerations in a specific pattern that she picked out, the complaint says. They also discovered the co-conspirator had Google searched “zip ties near me” days before the alleged attack, and black zip ties and duct tape were found in Greene’s car on the night of the incident.
In interviews with law enforcement, including the FBI, Greene’s story did not seem to match her alleged co-conspirator’s. Greene made her first court appearance Thursday before a federal judge in New Jersey and was ordered released on a $200,000 bond.
The Hill requested comment from her defense attorney.
She worked as a constituent advocate director for Van Drew, who has represented New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District since 2019, according to her LinkedIn. She is also a student at Rutgers Law School.

Presidents often lose control over their agenda, or the policy process, or pieces of legislation. Sometimes, they even lose control of their party. But Donald Trump seems to have lost control over the one thing every person, and especially those with immense power, should always maintain control over: himself. Yesterday the president called for the arrest and execution of elected American officials for the crime—as he sees it—of fidelity to the Constitution.
It would be easy merely to note, yet again, that the president is a depraved man and a menace to the American system of government. As remarkable as it is to say it, however, the outbursts of this past week are different, and were likely triggered by Trump’s panic over the release of files about his former friend, the dead sex offender Jeffery Epstein. No one should treat this new phase in the president’s aggression against democracy as just another episode in the Trump reality show.
A group of Democratic legislators—all of them either military veterans or former national-security officials—may have helped to push the president over the edge. On Tuesday, they issued a video reminding members of the U.S. Armed Forces that their oath of service requires them to refuse illegal orders, and that their loyalty is owed not to any one president, but to the Constitution itself. Normally, legislators don’t feel the need to make such an obvious declaration, but the president is using the military—including deploying troops to U.S. cities and ordering the killing of people on the high seas—in ways that almost certainly involve illegal orders. Members of Congress have a right, even an obligation, to speak up.
The president was already showing strain before his attack on the legislators. Last Friday, he lashed out at a female journalist who asked about the Epstein files, calling her “piggy.” (Trump seems to revel in getting away with speaking to women as president in ways that would land him on the sidewalk back in Queens.) On Tuesday, as he sat next to the Saudi crown prince, a man credibly accused by U.S. intelligence of murdering an American journalist, he lashed out at yet another female reporter: He called Mary Bruce of ABC “insubordinate”—a rather telling choice of words—and threatened to use the FCC to attack her network. Tuesday, of course, was the day the Epstein Files Transparency Act passed the House by a vote of 427–1. The next day, it passed the Senate by unanimous consent, and a humiliated Trump signed the bill into law.
Yesterday, Trump seemed to lose the last bit of his grip on his emotions as he fired off a fusillade of Truth Social posts. (“Trump must not have slept well Wednesday night,” Bill Kristol and Andrew Egger of The Bulwark observed today.) “This is really bad,” the president wrote, “and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???”
“Lock them up” is a favorite Trump chant, but he did not end with this classic demand. He went on: “Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand - We won’t have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET.” The charge, according to the chief executive? “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” He also reposted a comment that said: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!”

The Donald Trump administration in the United States has authorized killing people in boats on the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific, claiming they’re transporting illegal drugs.
Maritime and international law experts have raised concerns about the legality of the attacks. And based on a maritime court case from 1884, this use of force may well be illegal.
The Trump administration argues its actions are part of a war against what it has termed “narco-terrorists.” Killing the people manning these boats, it has said, will save the lives of Americans who might otherwise die of drug overdoses from the substances that are allegedly being transported by these boats.
The rationale that the U.S. is justified to kill people at sea in order to save people is similar to what used to be called the “custom of the sea”, which excused “survival cannibalism” if the consumption of one shipwrecked sailor helped the others survive. This custom, which basically excused “murder by necessity,” was essentially outlawed in a landmark case in 1884.
The story of The Mignonette
The case involved an incident of cannibalism after the yacht The Mignonette sank off the west coast of Africa and its four crew members escaped in a small dinghy with no time to gather food and water.
After three weeks at sea, their situation became so dire that two of the men decided that the ailing youngest member of the crew, a 17-year-old boy named Richard Parker, should be sacrificed so the rest of them could survive. They killed Parker and used his body for food and drink; the third crew member later said he opposed their actions, though feasted on Parker anyway.
Four days after they killed the boy, the three survivors were rescued.
Two of them, Tom Dudley and Edwin Stephens, were arrested for murder and cannibalism. They were brought to trial in the case R v Dudley and Stephens. A panel of judges found them both guilty of murder and they were initially sentenced to death. This judgment was later commuted to six months imprisonment due to errors in trial conduct. Nonetheless, the case did establish that their actions constituted murder and that necessity was not a valid defense for cannibalism.
Justifying murder
Like the crew members of The Mignonette, U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that killing people at sea is justified because it will preserve the lives of others.
This is the same reasoning behind the now discredited “custom of the sea.”
Rather than “survival cannibalism,” this amounts to “survival killing” based on the argument that other people will live if those on the boats die.
The Dudley and Stephens precedent means that if anyone ever goes to trial for the boat strikes, they could potentially be convicted of murder following the landmark 19th century ruling that killing and eating people is wrong.
The case is taught in law classes because of the difficult issues it raises:

• If it is justified, in what circumstances would it be viewed as the only viable option?
