Some years ago I had a coworker who was a graduate of University of Wisconsin. In Engineering. At this point, it must be a decade since he matriculated.
He could not math. Could not multiply by 2, 5, 3, 10, anything. Could not divide by 2, 3, 5, 10, anything. Trying to recall if he could add or subtract - I think not.
Not in his head. Not on paper. He was entirely dependent upon computer or calculator to give him an answer, even if it was wrong - he would not know the difference.
The company had banned electronic gizmos from the workroom floor. Building was about half a long block, square. This was a printing house, calculation heavy. needed to constantly multiply and divide by 3. I still have a ruler with inches, 1/3 inches, 1/9 inches.
EVERY time he wanted to do any calculation, he would need to walk all the way back to our Maintenance shop, tucked deep in the corner of the building, then walk back to the machine. A 2 second calculation required 10 minutes. You couldn't rush him.
A College Graduate Engineer. And whatever the calculator said wrong, it was good enough. No wonder our bridges, buildings, airplanes are falling down.
