In a memo promising legal immunity for those who kill alleged drug traffickers, the Trump administration floated an unusual legal theory.

The Trump administration is promising legal cover for military personnel who carry out lethal attacks on the alleged drug smugglers in the waters surrounding Latin America.
Amid mounting questions from senior military and civilian lawyers about the legality of proposed strikes on civilian boats, the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel this summer produced a classified opinion intended to shield service members up and down the chain of command from prosecution, according to three government officials.
The legal theory advanced in the finding, two sources said, differs from some of President Donald Trump’s public statements on the killings. It claims that narcotics on the boats are lawful military targets because their cargo generates revenue for cartels whom the Trump administration claims are in armed conflict with the U.S.
One senior defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, blasted the opinion. “I don’t know what’s more insane – that the ‘President of Peace’ is starting an illegal war or that he’s giving a get out of jail free card to the U.S. military,” said the official, referencing President Donald Trump’s self-proclaimed moniker. “Hopefully they realize there’s no immunity for war crimes. Nor is there a statute of limitations.”
The Trump administration continues to keep the OLC memo from the American people but, this week, finally allowed members of Congress and their staffs to read the document. On Wednesday, just 20 copies were made available in a secure room, causing delays among lawmakers and staffers who have been waiting months to understand the legal reasoning underpinning the attacks.
On Thursday evening, War Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the campaign of attacks is called Operation Southern Spear. Led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and Southern Command, “this mission defends our Homeland, removes narco-terrorists from our Hemisphere, and secures our Homeland from the drugs that are killing our people,” he wrote on X. Southern Spear kicked off earlier this year as part of the Navy’s next-generation effort to use small robot interceptor boats and vertical take-off and landing drones to conduct counternarcotics operations.
The military has carried out 20 known attacks, destroying 21 boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean since September, killing at least 80 civilians. The most recent attack, on a vessel in the Caribbean on Monday, first reported by CBS on Thursday, reportedly killed four people. Following most of the attacks, Hegseth or Trump have claimed that the victims belonged to an unspecified designated terrorist organization, or DTO.
A list of DTOs, consisting of Latin American cartels and criminal organizations, is attached to the OLC opinion which claims that attacks on suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific are lawful and that personnel involved are immune from prosecution.
“The strikes were ordered consistent with the laws of armed conflict, and as such are lawful orders. Military personnel are legally obligated to follow lawful orders and, as such, are not subject to prosecution for following lawful orders,” a Justice Department spokesperson told The Intercept.

It looks like you're now writing your quotes in two spots now?
This is the list of what I see now...
1. Your opening Font Color and Italics Tags.
2. Then you typed out "Tick Tock"
3. Then you've got "T" (in pink/italics), followed by two sets of closing Font Color and Italics tags and your coffee emoji sandwiched between them. (As written, you only need one of those closing sets instead of two because there are only one set of open tags above them).
4. Finally, after all that, you post the title of the youtube video with the video link below it. None of this section has any font color or italics.
I'm assuming that "Tick Tock" isn't now part of your signature that's at the top of your posts, so I'm not really clear on how you pulled off writing "Tick Tock" after the opening tags and then adding the closing tags, and then adding the video and title after this without the tags without Tick Tock being part of your tag.
It doesn't really fix the problem though as you still everything tagged in such a way where you still have text being sandwiched in between tags.
If you don't write anything in the top where you wrote "Tick Tock" in this post and you put everything below where your YouTube video is, your current solution works. But if you write in both places now, the only easy way to remove your tag is to remove everything at the top, including "Tick Tock" or whatever you're writing there, and you've really just moved the problem from the bottom of your posts to somewhere between the top and the middle of them.
We would still have to remember and eventually adjust to having to remove your signature on the top of every one of your posts instead of the bottom though, but at least it's a solution.

"T" and your emoji, and possibly a longer signature if you wanted.
Closing Font Color/Italics tags.
If you did it that way, your body text would all be white unfortunately, but your taglines and signatures would be pink.
Then anybody replying to you would only have to remove everything from your Signature Block right before the closing quote tag, which is how to remove everything from everybody else's signature when replying without having to go back and edit posts to dig out stray, malformed tags.

Last Friday, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut issued a permanent injunction blocking Donald Trump’s attempt to federalize and deploy the National Guard into Portland, Oregon. Immergut, a Trump nominee, concluded that the administration had no legal authority to intervene, since civilian law enforcement could handily manage the anti–Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests on its own. Her ruling largely turned on credibility: Oregon said its own police had the situation under control; the Justice Department claimed the city was in the grip of a violent emergency. Immergut found Oregon far more believable, dismissing many of the government’s assertions as exaggerations or worse.
On this week’s Slate Plus bonus episode of Amicus, co-hosts Dahlia Lithwick and Mark Joseph Stern discussed Immergut’s ruling and its coolly scathing takedown of the Trump administration’s lies under oath. An excerpt from their conversation, below, has been edited and condensed for clarity.
Dahlia Lithwick: This was a 106-page masterpiece of a ruling that comes down to a dispute over facts.

And again and again, Judge Immergut found that the Trump administration’s characterization of the facts was just not correct. Talk about the ways in which she called out government witnesses for twisting the truth.
Mark Joseph Stern: Well, the Justice Department already got caught red-handed lying in this case once before. And Immergut’s latest ruling identifies even more falsehoods put forth by the government. It’s a fascinating read, because her job here in this case is to determine whether it’s true that federal law enforcement needed assistance from the National Guard to enforce the law and keep the peace; that’s the legal justification that Trump has cited for sending in the troops. So she held a three-day bench trial. She brought in witnesses and had them testify on the stand to get an answer. Then, in this opinion, she sorted through the testimony and the exhibits and all of the evidence piece by piece to see what was credible and what wasn’t.
Over and over again, the testimony that Judge Immergut found not to be credible was submitted by the Trump administration, while the testimony that she found to be credible was put forth by Oregon in opposition to Trump. And when she weighed the truth against the falsehoods, she found it incredibly clear that there was never any lawful basis for sending in the Guard, because in reality, civilian law enforcement in Portland had the situation under control.
On this week’s main show, California Attorney General Rob Bonta made a passionate case for why we don’t trust Fox News, we don’t trust videos from years ago, we don’t trust mere assertions—the way we sort through all this is in court, where that is cordoned off and the judge just looks at the facts. That’s what happened here. We don’t have time to talk about every single claim that the Justice Department made that was blown up as bogus. But can you give us your favorite examples?
