They all wore the same fake, superficial smile. They all carried out their duty. It was like they were possessed. There was no getting through to them, no waking them, no reasoning with them.
It all hit me like I was seeing the entire world for the very first time. A great veil had been lifted, and I no longer saw the carefully crafted illusion, but the stage of an ancient and seemingly endless evil. I could feel it within the density of the air, I could see it swell like the nighttides in the darkness of their eyes, and I could feel it linger in the vibrations of the city.
Nothing was the same after that. I walked home, and I knew that the thousands I was passing were sleepwalking through not just a war, but through Hell. I stood in my apartment, on the 31st floor and gazed over the masses, and God told me to leave New York City. And I did.
I'll write a book about it all when it's over...
