Trump’s framing of his recommendations as common sense rather than specialized knowledge is familiar to USCD’s Evans, who has studied the effect of populism on the public’s view of expertise.
“A hallmark of populism is to say ‘common sense.’ At other times this has been called the common wisdom of the American people: You don’t need experts and scientists to tell you what to do,” he said. “Your own common sense can solve these problems.”
Trump’s appearance on Monday conjured memories of the press conference in April 2020, when he wondered aloud if treating people with heat and UV light or injecting bleach could kill the coronavirus. The president later claimed he was trying to prank reporters with his remarks.
During his first term, however, physicians and scientists within the federal government would occasionally push back against the president’s comments, and often gave guidance that conflicted with Trump’s recommendations. And his comments this week went far beyond the “wondering” stage to a forcefulness not seen before.
“There’s this longer trend of the erosion of the value of science and evidence in Donald Trump’s press conferences,” said Tabitha Bonilla, a political scientist at Northwestern University, noting that Trump’s lack of adherence to facts is consistent going back to his first term. “What’s really fascinating is that in this administration, unlike the last time, he’s created these advisory groups and boards and structures that agree with him.”

President Donald Trump took a chaotic, and at times, incoherent turn through the 80th meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, upending US policy on the Russia-Ukraine war in the process.
What just happened? Trump started his day with a bizarre speech to the assembled world leaders, at points attacking other countries, efforts to address climate change, and the United Nations itself. The address was noticeably light on policy and heavy on false claims.
Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, Trump made at least two potentially significant pronouncements: NATO countries should shoot down Russian jets that violate their airspace, and Ukraine should push to reclaim all of its original territory from Russia.
What’s the context? Trump has been inconsistent about US policy on the war. Last month, he hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin for a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, that was widely perceived as a win for the Russian president; today’s statement marks an about-face on Trump’s stated vision for an end to the war.
Why does this matter? Trump has intermittently appeared disillusioned about his relationship with Putin, including in remarks today with French President Emmanuel Macron. Coupled with his answer on how NATO countries should respond to airspace violations and his new position on the war, this would be the most aggressive stance of his presidency toward Russia — if he sticks with it.
What’s the big picture? Trump changes his mind on even the biggest policy questions, and he’s often subject to the opinions of the people he last spoke with (in this case, Zelenskyy and European leaders supporting him, like Macron). That makes covering what he says in major moments like these difficult, but his pronouncements can have serious real-world implications. Whether they constitute a meaningful policy shift remains to be seen.

Between September 2 and September 19 the US military, acting on President Trump’s orders, bombed at least three boats traveling in international waters, killing a total of at least seventeen civilians in cold blood. Ordinarily when US armed forces kill civilians, the president does not brag about it, yet Trump is apparently so proud of the executions that he posted video footage of them on TruthSocial. And while ordinarily the killing of any civilian prompts investigations and apologies, in this instance the administration has promised only that there are more to come. As he put it on TruthSocial, “BE WARNED—IF YOU ARE TRANSPORTING DRUGS THAT CAN KILL AMERICANS, WE ARE HUNTING YOU!”
“There was no conceivable legal authority for these killings,” writes David Cole in the NYR Online:
We are not at war with drug traffickers. The “war on drugs” is a metaphor, not a legal term of art that authorizes killing the “enemy.” The human beings on these boats were civilians, and even if there were an actual war going on, the laws of war prohibit targeting civilians unless they are directly engaged in hostilities. Even if the boats’ occupants were, as the administration alleges, carrying illegal drugs…that offense would at most have authorized their arrest, trial, and, if convicted, incarceration for a period of years. It would not authorize the death penalty, much less their summary execution without trial.
Indeed, Cole elaborates, “In the absence of any conceivable military justification for these acts, it is difficult to view them as anything but premeditated murder, pure and simple.”

Jimmy Kimmel Returns: ABC Ends Suspension Starting Tuesday
It’s irrefutable now: Trump is nakedly following the playbook of autocrats like Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orban. As his poll numbers fall, he is rushing to lock in permanent power by punishing his opponents and intimidating everyone else into submission. Craven congressional Republicans and a complicit Supreme Court have abetted Trump’s destruction of our democratic safeguards and norms.
Yet Trump has a significant problem that neither Putin nor Orban faced. When Putin and Orban were consolidating their autocratics, they were genuinely popular. They were perceived by the public as effective and competent leaders. Just nine months into his presidency, Trump, by contrast, is deeply unpopular. He is increasingly seen as chaotic and inept. As David Frum says, this means that he is in a race against time. Can he consolidate power before he loses his aura of inevitability? Will those who run major institutions – particularly corporate CEOs – understand that we are at a crucial juncture, and that by accommodating Trump they have more to lose than by standing up to him?
To put it bluntly, is the Jimmy Kimmel affair the harbinger of a failed Trumpian putsch?
Before I address that question, I want to offer some historical comparisons that illustrate how poorly Trump is doing compared with his role models, Putin and Orban. I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, but I think the point deserves further elaboration.
First, Russia. Putin appears to have been extremely popular in the early 2000s, as he was consolidating power. His net approval — approval minus disapproval — was consistently above 50 percent.
Why was Putin so popular? Kitchen table issues. The Russian economy performed very badly for years after the fall of Communism, culminating in a devastating financial crisis in 1998. But Putin got to preside over a rapid economic recovery: Real GDP per capita doubled between 1998 and 2008:

Viktor Orban has never been as popular as Putin at his peak. Nonetheless, for most of the 2010s, as he consolidated power, his net approval was strongly positive, often by 10 points or more. Again, the main explanation was probably his perceived economic success. Orban took power at a time when Hungary’s economy was deeply depressed by austerity policies, and was able to preside over a large decline in unemployment:

Trump’s net approval, by contrast, turned negative within weeks after taking office and has just continued to fall:

As G. Elliott Morris points out, his position looks even worse when you consider intensity. Almost half the public disapproves “strongly,” twice the share with strong approval.
Some of the public’s disdain for Trump reflects alarm over his assault on democracy, the spectacle of abductions by masked secret police, his attacks on education and public health, his destruction of key agencies like the FBI, and more. Yet, as always, economics plays a key role in Trump’s cratering popularity.
People have not forgotten that Trump made big promises during the campaign: He would end inflation on day one, reduce the price of groceries, and cut electricity prices in half. None of that is remotely happening. Moreover, more economic pain is coming as the full inflationary impact of tariffs and deportations will soon be felt. This Idea Threatened to Tear MAGA Apart. Trump Just Picked a Side—and It May Come Back to Haunt Him

Shortly after President Donald Trump’s electoral victory in November, the coalition that returned him to power began tearing itself apart over a once esoteric issue: the H-1B visa. As the foundation of a temporary-guest program that brought highly skilled foreign-born workers into the United States—overwhelmingly, though not exclusively, tech engineers from India—the H-1B had become the most visible symbol of an intensifying ideological rift. On one side, the Silicon Valley executives who’d newly embraced Trump, advised his transition, and ran companies that depend on this immigrant labor; on the other side, the racist MAGA base that wanted to slow down all immigration altogether (especially from so-called third world countries).
In an effort to please both factions, Trump has attempted various compromises, including a “ban” on birthright citizenship for the children of H-1B workers. (That order remains blocked in court nationwide.) But Trump delivered a clear victory to his restrictionist base on Friday, when he signed an executive order requiring that visa applicants and incoming H-1B workers each pay the U.S. government a $100,000 fee, effective as of Sunday.
The order’s vague language made it unclear whether this was an annual fee, or whether visa holders already employed stateside but located outside the country at that moment—perhaps to visit family in India and China—would be barred from reentry sans six-figure check. A stray comment from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared to confirm those fears. As such, America’s white-collar sector panicked, with tech and finance stalwarts like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Goldman Sachs dispatching emergency alerts to their immigrant workforces and asking them to either stay put in the U.S. or return before Sunday. Trump administration officials gave vocal reassurances that this was a one-time fee and did not apply to current visa holders; nevertheless, some workers canceled imminent vacations and instigated dramatic scenes by requesting that their already departed flights immediately turn around and land back on U.S. soil. In turn, anonymous bigots on 4chan organized a “Clog the Toilet” operation, jacking up the costs of returning flights from India by registering en masse for seats but stalling just before checkout.
By Sunday evening, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services had issued an FAQ on the executive order, formally clarifying that the $100,000 charge would not apply to those who already possessed visas, had applied for one before Sunday, or were paying renewal fees. Immigrants whose timing adhered to those specifications would face no curbs on international travel, the FAQ clarified, and future H-1B applicants may be exempt from the fee if they work in specialized fields like medicine. (If this were to come into effect, such applicants would not be exempted from the usual H-1B charges, including $780 from an employee’s corporate sponsor and $215 from the worker themselves for entering the lottery system, which randomly decides who will earn one of the tens of thousands of H-1B openings offered each year.)
Still, the fallout has endured, and not just thanks to fears that Trump’s aggressive immigration forces won’t hold back in targeting legally settled foreign workers. (See also: the Korean visa-holder illegally swept up in this month’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on a Georgia-based Hyundai factory.) The $100,000 price tag is just the latest plank of an immigration policy that shuts off American borders to everyone except for the wealthiest. (Trump also rolled out his long-teased $1 million “gold card” on Friday, replacing the previous green-card application system with a visa fast-track based only on the ability to pay.)

How the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk is transforming MAGA
The movement is now becoming a faith that could outlive Donald Trump.

Charlie Kirk has been turned into the first martyr of the MAGA faith. And this matters because it is martyr veneration that helped both Christianity and Islam transform from small local movements centered on charismatic preachers into global religions. In launching its own martyrs, MAGA may be moving from a movement focused on one beguiling leader in the person of Donald Trump to a broader faith that could outlast him.
Since the assassination, a variety of MAGA-foe pundits have compared the MAGA response to Kirk’s murder — including Stephen Miller’s convenient claim that Kirk’s last message to him was a call to “dismantle the radical Left” — to the response to the killing of Horst Wessel, a German Nazi murdered by two members of Communist Party of Germany in 1930. In the hands of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, Wessel’s death became a rallying cry, and Wessel himself a heroic martyr whose death symbolized the Nazi struggle against Communism. Goebbels had Wessel mythologized through songs, rallies, and public ceremonies, creating a cult around him that galvanized support for the Nazi movement.
The comparisons to Horst Wessel are not without merit. His death was a major boon for Nazi propaganda, just as Kirk’s death has given MAGA and the Trump administration proximate cause to escalate attacks on their political adversaries. But those comparisons miss something crucial. Goebbels himself was consciously drawing on an earlier model, and it is that model, the Late Antique cult of the martyrs, that the MAGA faithful are now, consciously or not, also invoking.
Until now, the evangelical Christianity that Kirk embraced — and still the default mode of worship for American Christian nationalists — has had only a tenuous relationship with martyrdom. There have been powerful stories, to be sure: Cassie Bernall, the teenager at Columbine who supposedly declared her faith before being shot, or John Allen Chau, the young missionary killed on North Sentinel Island. But these episodes are remembered as isolated moments of witness-inspiring stories of faith, rather than built into an ongoing culture of veneration as evidenced by the official support for the efforts to celebrate Kirk’s memory, including from the president of the United States. Evangelicals have often been suspicious of martyr-saints in part because this brand of martyr veneration smacks of “works” and Catholic hagiography rather than the Evangelical emphasis on personal salvation.
That reluctance has been a weakness, because martyrs inspire the faithful, galvanize movements, and spread a message far more effectively than any sermon. After all, what better evidence of truth than that there were hundreds, nay thousands, prepared to die in witness to that truth?
As MAGA’s first martyr, the myth being crafted around Kirk both mirrors that of earlier religions’ martyrs while still bearing the unique marks of the MAGA faith.
In fact, while it is now common to claim that Christians were relentlessly persecuted by the Roman Empire, in recent years this idea has been widely challenged. Scholars like Candida Moss have convincingly argued that while individual Christians were persecuted and occasionally killed for their beliefs, the idea of persistent and widespread persecution was largely an invention of Christians themselves. Researchers have argued that stories of Christian persecution were insidiously crafted not just to inspire the faithful, but also to silence and shame nonconformists and keep the churches funded.

President Trump gave a speech to the United Nations on Tuesday. In addition to signaling absolute contempt for our allies and for global institutions, he slipped into angry and solipsistic grievance. He boasted about his polling, seethed that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, threatened to unshackle the U.S. military from international law, and angrily commanded other nations to cease combating climate change. Many observers expressed alarm. We got to thinking: What if the self-obsessed craziness is itself the message the world receives about the United States? Nicholas Grossman, one of our favorite commentators on global affairs, suggests other nations will conclude that Trump is “really crazy” and that the U.S. is an unreliable actor for the foreseeable future. This is damaging. The prospects for a future president repairing this fiasco are grim.
