Booker then played the race card (shocking, we know), accusing vigil attendees of bigotry for calling out her disgraceful conduct. “I’m not being aggressive. My voice is very calm. You’re calling me aggressive because I’m a black woman,” she claimed.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) didn’t hold back, sharing an image of Booker in handcuffs. “This is what happened to the person who was mocking Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Texas Tech,” he wrote, adding the blunt acronym “FAFO” — short for “Fuck around and find out.”
Booker was hit with charges of battery, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, with an additional citation for assault, according to the New York Post. She was released on a measly $200 bond the next day. Texas Tech has since expelled her for her appalling actions.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk was yet another example of the sickening plague of violence in American politics. And it has been condemned on the left as well as the right. However, MAGA immediately proclaimed that “the left” was celebrating his murder. The immediacy of that fabrication, before the killer was even identified, was clearly part of a campaign to exploit Kirk’s death for political gain.
While we should vigorously condemn Kirk’s murder, we also shouldn’t bowdlerize his record, pretending that he wasn’t who he really was. For example, he certainly wasn’t a free speech advocate. Go read Jamelle Bouie:
Kirk’s first act on the national stage was to create a McCarthyite watchlist of college and university professors, lecturers and academics. Kirk urged visitors to the website to report those who “discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.”
The list, which still exists, https://www.professorwatchlist.org/ is a catalog of speech acts in and outside the classroom. The surest way to find yourself on the watchlist as an academic is to disagree, publicly, with conservative ideology, or even acknowledge ideas and concepts that are verboten among the far right. And the obvious intent of the list is made clear at the end of each entry, where Kirk and his allies urge readers to contact the schools and institutions in question. Targets of the watchlist attest to harassment and threats of violence.
The Professor Watchlist is a straightforward intimidation campaign, and you can draw a line directly from Kirk’s work attacking academics to the Trump administration’s all-out war on American higher education, an assault on the right to speak freely and dissent.
Nor was Kirk willing to agree to any restrictions on guns in order to protect lives.
What I want to focus on here, however, are Kirk’s views on gender and society, because I think much of his widespread appeal was based on those views.
Kirk was a counterrevolutionary, a revanchist, who deftly exploited a vision of a lost American gender ideal and the accompanying feelings of dislocation and humiliation on the part of men. Specifically, he wanted to reverse what Claudia Goldin (winner of the Nobel in Economics in 2023) has called the “quiet revolution” in women’s role in American society that occurred between the late 1970s and early 1990s.
It's important to understand that this revolution in American gender roles took place more than thirty years ago -- before many of Kirk’s followers were born. In essence, Kirk rejected contemporary American society, harkening back to a form of social relations most modern Americans have never seen – particularly the young men (and sometimes young women) that he sermonized to on college campuses. This extreme position clearly resonated with an undercurrent of resentment among these young men. I’ll discuss the reasons for that resentment in a later post. For today, I want to talk about what, specifically, Kirk was rejecting.
Despite what you may think, Goldin’s “quiet revolution” didn’t refer to the phenomenon of increasing numbers of women in the paid labor force. In fact, that trend began in the 1940s, and had mostly culminated by the late 1970s. The chart below shows the share of jobs in America held by women, which is close to 50 percent now but was already substantial by the early 1970s:

The sentence "You people are finished." means "Trumptards will murder Democrats." Rewriting says what 6ix doesn't make clear. Trump does the same with his thinly veiled threats of torture, destruction, and death for Democrats. What Charlie Kirk Told Me About His Legacy
He didn’t just want to win elections. He wanted to win a generation.

“We finally meet,” Charlie Kirk said to me.
I’d come to a Phoenix hotel in September 2022 to see Kirk host a conference on the offenses of the “radical left.” I remember that he gripped my hand, unbuttoned his suit jacket, and then eyed the long table in the drab, airless meeting room where I’d sat waiting for him. “This is like a show trial,” he said.
Kirk wanted to debate, which was his stock-in-trade. By the time we met, I’d been reporting on him for several years—about his campaign tactics, his opposition to coronavirus-vaccine mandates, and his mission to remake American education—and he didn’t like my coverage. “We disagree,” he told me. But he was also disarming, appreciating that we shared Chicago roots and joking that my round, thin-rimmed glasses made me look “woke.” Maybe he saw me as a prospect for conversion. “So how do you view the world?” he asked me. I told him that my job as a reporter was figuring things out and explaining them to the public.
In that spirit, I want to explain a few things that I learned about Kirk that day. The interview was off the record. But last week, after Kirk’s assassination, his spokesperson told me that I could bring his words to the public. Over the course of an hour with me, Kirk reflected candidly on his priorities and—it’s strange to write this now—on his own legacy. He wasn’t trying to win the next election, he made clear to me, so much as an entire generation.
Kirk didn’t want to be seen principally as a political activist. Because of his success in mobilizing voters to elect Donald Trump, he’s often portrayed that way. But electoral politics accounted for only a small part of his work, he told me. He professed to be less interested in evaluating the merits of political candidates than in arguing, for example, about “the Marxist construction of labor.” He didn’t just want to change how people voted; he wanted to change how they thought. “You can decide to believe me or not, but the politics stuff, I’m just kind of like …” he trailed off and shrugged. “I do show up to the events, happy to see it. I’m more focused on educational, transformational, multi-decade change.”
I believed him. This is why Kirk spent hours each week ministering to young people on his podcast, The Charlie Kirk Show. It’s why he steered his conservative youth organization, Turning Point USA, to churches and schools, not just to voting booths. “It’s fine, I love Trump, all that,” he told me, but he lamented that Turning Point’s political victories attracted “all the sexy headlines,” that “Trump-endorsed group” was its primary identifier. “See, politics is always an outgrowth,” he said. “If you’re able to get people to believe philosophy, anything’s possible.”
As Kirk pivoted our conversation from politics—the upcoming midterms, plans for 2024—to religious faith, his voice rose. Countering left-wing ideas, he told me, “that’s the thing that fires me up the most.” He spoke of his desire to imbue young people with Judeo-Christian values to help them build a “cogent worldview” and reject policies that he opposed, such as “stupid race stuff.” A year earlier, he had formed a religious branch of Turning Point called TPUSA Faith, which used summits, study groups, and online courses to spread ideas about the Christian foundations of the United States and “eliminate wokeism from the American pulpit.”
With missionary zeal, he laid out his catechism for me: “What does it mean to be a biblical citizen? Where do rights come from? What kind of form of government is best? Who are you as a human being?
