There's always been a certain type of song that I've always been drawn to, often times without me even realizing it for years. This is one that I posted here a few summers ago when I'd heard it while working out in the garage. It's since been on my rotation, but as amazing as Brandi Carlile's voice is, there are a LOT of lyrics that I never understood and didn't even do a great job filling in no matter how many times I listened to it.
But something told me that I needed to look at the lyrics tonight...
Something is happening. A sense of clarity that I never felt before. Maybe all I needed was nearly a decade of sobriety under my belt to finally achieve it.
For some reason, maybe on a subconscious level, I just knew that I had perfect understanding of this song today when I heard it while doing yardwork outside, even though I still didn't know more than half of the words to it until tonight.
And now that I've learned them, aside from her speaking for herself as a Woman, it may as well be my song. It wasn't a song about being broken. It was a song about being reborn. It's not a song about running. It's a song about running free, and no longer being tethered by outside forces that don't matter and hold no power over you anymore. And the only running you NEED to be doing anymore unless you feel like running is away from the grip of the narcissists and the manipulators. Until you finish mending up those fences and build up that perimeter where you no longer even need to run for any reason unless you feel like it.
No religion or self-help books or pills or group therapy required. An honest awakening.
Similarly, I would suspect, this is how Lauren Hill felt when she wrote "Killing me Softly" about the young man singing her life with his words...
I understand every single word, and it may resonate with me more than any other song I've ever felt before. I only wish there were more of it. I should listen to the whole album.
This was a woman who's been to hell and back and finally learned to trust herself. And I'll bet in real life she's one hell of a lady for it now.

Jaynze probably isn't going to like this song, but he might if he gives it a real listen.
Say what you want about Lauryn Hill, and knowing full well what she said she thought about white people when she was young and dumb, but I've been a huge fan of hers since I saw her in Sister Act II. What a voice.

Love that I found a 20 minute loop of Blinding Lights by The Weeknd. Going to have to get that on my mp3 player. They've got a 10 hour version, but as much of a banger as the song is I think that type of repetition would probably drive me mad by the end of the day.
So 80's it's awesome.
That keyboard gets me every time.
