NBC's Kristen Welker asked about the congressional map in Illinois, where "despite President Trump winning 44% of the statewide vote in 2024, Republicans hold only three of Illinois' 17 districts."
"These districts seem to be designed to maximize Democratic advantage," Welker asked. "What do you say to those who argue that it's hypocritical for you to criticize Texas for partisanship, when your state also drew maps to boost your party's standing?"
"Texas is trying to violate the Voting Rights Act. We didn't," Pritzker said. "A map was passed, and it was done at the end of the census, the decennial census. So that's how it's done in this country. You talked about how rare it is to do what he’s doing. Yes, it is. What’s even rarer is to do it at the behest of the president of the United States, who's clearly attempting to and says that he deserves to have five more seats."
"Every major group that grades the fairness of congressional maps gives your state an 'F,'" Welker followed up. "You talk about preserving democracy. How do you preserve democracy if you're using the same tactics that you've criticized Texas Republicans for?"
"What they're talking about is a distraction. The reality is that the violation of people's voting rights is what Texas is attempting to do. That's what's wrong with their efforts right now," Pritzker said.

It's been over a decade since I've seen a Democrat get a probe like that on TV, because they don't ever show up on the few outlets who would ask them questions like that.
Not only by Wallace, but by Stephen Colbert too, if you missed that. I'd argue that his visit with Colbert was even worse since it had the picture of his gerrymandered to hell state for Colbert's entire stupid audience to see instead of words or figures that would probably go over their heads.

Not surprised the only outlet that I can find replaying THIS particular segment of Colbert's show is Fox News, as much as I HATE to post anything they put out.

Democratic state legislators from Texas are on the run, trying to deny the GOP the quorum it needs to push through a mid-decade redistricting plan that would gerrymander the state’s maps more severely and net Republicans 3–5 seats. There are parallel pushes underway in Missouri and Indiana, and I believe there’s also a move to make the Florida map more Republican-friendly.
Some of this is just that even gerrymandered states normally aren’t totally maxed out for their majority party. But some of it (a theme that will recur in this article) is that the party coalitions are shifting somewhat due to racial depolarization, so in Texas and Florida in particular, there are chances for Republicans to re-optimize to fit their new and improved performance with Hispanic voters.
Democrats in several states are talking about retaliating with new maps of their own. There are, however, some procedural impediments to this.
California requires a ballot initiative to create new maps. Gerrymandering is unpopular enough that an initiative could quite plausibly fail even in a very blue state, but it’s also sufficiently low salience that state legislators who vote for skewed congressional maps are unlikely to face meaningful voter backlash. This asymmetry where Texas Republicans can do something mildly unpopular and expect the voters to blow it off while Gavin Newsom needs California residents to affirmatively agree to do something mildly unpopular is unfortunate. Because, on the merits, I think this is an extremely easy question.
Gerrymandering is bad. Democrats, to their credit, pushed for a national gerrymandering ban in 2021. Republicans, instead of crying crocodile tears about the (admittedly absurd-looking) congressional map in Illinois, should simply embrace the notion of a ban and get it done. But until that happens, nobody can afford to unilaterally disarm. If you live in California or some other blue state, you should push for aggressive maps.
Someday, I hope the system will change. The more interesting question, though, is how it should change.
And I hope that America will embrace the actually good solution to this problem — proportional representation — rather than expending efforts on gerrymandering fixes that aren’t as good or simply don’t work.
The shape of maps to come
One difficulty in getting cross-party agreement on solutions to gerrymandering is that Democrats and Republicans tend to have different concepts of what constitutes a gerrymander. Republicans tend to really focus in on the idea that gerrymandering means maps that look weird, with odd squiggles and strangely shaped districts. Democrats tend to focus more on the proportionality of a map. To Democrats, a quintessential unfair congressional map is something like Wisconsin, where the problem isn’t that the aesthetics of the lines are particularly egregious, it’s that Democrats won 48 percent of the vote in House elections but only got two out of eight seats.
To illustrate the difference between these critiques, it’s useful to look at two different maps of Maryland that were both drawn by Democratic state legislators. The old map looked insane and used to be Republicans’ go-to example of an egregious Democratic gerrymander.

They don't have the money to do anything. They're already tapped out putting their entire states into debt giving freebies out to illegals and taxing their citizens into the poor house. They have no ability for the next 3.5 years to get congress to print more money for them. When SCOTUS rules on it and allows Trump to withhold money from states, they will lose even more federal money if they don't comply with the removal of illegals.

Empty threat. Both men will be long dead before that happens. Trump from age and J.B. from a massive heart attack and/or stroke. Besides... They already tried that for 10 years and look what it got them. And there will be so few Democrats in Congress by then it hardly matters anyhow.
The Senate map is basically locked down for Republicans for another decade. Once SCOTUS rules against racial gerrymandering by next June, we get the voter rolls cleaned up once per year to keep dead people from voting Democrat, end mail-in fraud ballots, end the use of voting drop boxes, and we remove illegals from the census results and Blue States lose another 10 or 20 house seats, Democrats are going to lose anywhere from 25 to 50 house seats in total.
And that's not even counting the 2.1 Million additional Republican Party registrations and the 2.5 Million that Democrats lost in the last 4 years while Biden* was President.
Democrats are a dead party.
