Real people can count. Russians can't. In World War II, the United States suffered approximately 407,316 military deaths according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Russians know how many were killed in Ukraine, how many wounded, and how many MIA. They're just not stupid enough to tell you.
Meduza, in cooperation with the BBC, attempts to estimate Russian deaths. They look at funeral and burial notices, new funeral plots, applications for family benefits, social media, etc. and recently added probate notices to the data they collect. (Assuming that probate of a military aged male's estate means either KIA or MIA and presumed dead.) There's probably an undercount ... I think they estimate 20% ... but at least it's a figure based on something other than Kiev's or NATO's or the CIA's wishful thinking.
Russians attempt to count Ukrainian dead, but they have no idea how many are dead under the rubble. They also collect the bodies of dead Ukrainians, and recently returned 6,000 to Ukraine, with another 6,000 ready to go.
Ukraine doesn't want them. Once a soldier is declared dead, the family is entitled to benefits, which Kiev can't afford. Originally Kiev was going to refuse them, but bad publicity forced them to accept. So now Kiev is just burning the bodies without returning them to the families.
And Zelensky... he'll be HAPPY to give you any kind of bogus number you want! A million Russian dead? Two million? 47,000 Ukrainisns killed? (He actually said that a few month ago.) One thing he CAN'T do is give you an accurate number, because unit commanders hand out soldier's pay. If someone is killed, they don't report it, they just pocket the hryvna.
