Happy with Last Night's awards?

I was utterly dissappointed by the entire thing. I mean, I can't complain much about who won but there wasn't a single surprise the entire night. I woulda killed for Owen or Portman to win a supporting acting award, or for Scorsese to finally win a directing award...

Rock was dull (especially after seeing the Carson tribute).

Also it really felt like they were trying to finish on time but doing so by taking shortcuts (such as all the nominees on stage or giving awards at their seats). There are other, better ways to keep it on schedule.

You know, I saw a lot of movies last year, and none of them were nominated for anything, save of course spiderman, but that was nominated for what, sound editing? For shame academy, for shame.

While I liked MILLION DOLLAR BABY (was #3 on my list of best of 2004), I was kinda hoping that THE AVIATOR would sweep everything (since it was #2 on my list).

But other than Marty losing for the third time to an actor (albeit one whose done his best work and could be seen as a contemporary of Scorseses), I was generally OK with the wins of the evening, although I would've liked to have seen Morgan Spurlock win for Best Doc Feature.

Fave moment was when Edna Mode presented alongside Pierce Brosnan for Costume Design and basically ignored him. Just perfect.

I'm so sick of Scorsese being passed over, though admittedly Clint did a superb job. "Aviator" wasn't Scorses's best work, but it's about time the Academy recognised him as being one of the leading directors of our time. Rock managed to hold back alot more than I thought he would, but I don't think he'll get the gig next year. Blanchett and Freeman's awards were well deserved, I haven't seen Ray so I can't comment on Foxx. Altogether I found the awards too hurried and a tad boring, I even found myself missing Billy Crystal! (I loved his musical opening last year) I have just one more question...where was Jack Nicholson? I was beginning to count on his presence in the audience, it seemed that alot of the big names were absent this year.

Don't know man. I know they were trying to go hip this year by getting Rock to host it, but Crystal has the whole hosting gig nailed. I like it when he digitally inserts himself into the nominated movies of each year. Like in 97 when he got beaten up by Russell Crowe, auditioned for THE FULL MONTY, strangled by Robin in GOOD WILL HUNTING and dangled from the railing of the Titanic with Kevin Costner.

And so what if THE AVIATOR isn't Martin's best work. THE LAST WALTZ proved long ago that Martin could pull something out of his ass, and it's still gold, orat least a whole level better than most of the mediocrities that pass as movies.

I think that with Marty, instead of giving him an Oscar for one movie, they should give him one for his entire career, like they did with Sidney Lumet this year. That way, you're honoring one of the best bodies of work by a filmmaker, rather than just one movie.

I'll be happy with the Oscars when they decide to do away with the ceremony and just mail them to the winners, then announce the list of awards on msnbc.com.

Awards ceremonies suck. It's a bunch of rich and famous people congratulating themselves and each other. It's the ultimate masturbatory event, hyped to the point of absurdity.

Just make the movies, and base the awards on what the general public's ticket purchases are.

well the way the viewers & ratings go down each year,
pretty soon it will be that we all just read about it the next day.

In fact the post-Oscar coverage was the best,
did anyone see Jon Stewart's show last night?
He had me rolling on the floor laughing.

now JS should host the show!

oh and talking about lowered ratings,
did you hear them talking about 28 billion people watching the show? LOL
they are so full of it.
The New Yorker had a great article exploding the 'one billion viewer' myth:
fact is that last year they had 45 million in the USA
and another 5-10 million over seas
not anywhere near the one billion mark,
and this year will be even fewer.

I always find it interesting that people get upset when black hosts make jokes about race, but no one seems to get upset when Billy Crystal spends half of the evening making Jewish jokes.

My only problem with Rock hosting was that after the monologue, he reigned himself in and handled the rest of the show with kids' gloves. I would hate to see him lose his edge because the Academy wants to draw in younger audience, but appease middle America at the same time.

Oh it was nothing like that. I wasn't upset, but right now there's a huge split in school (because of Black history month) about a speaker last year that offended alot of the non-african american students with alot of false and unneeded comments, so there was alot of issues surrounding this year's assembly.

So by the time the Academy stuff was on, I was completely tired of it.
