Happy with Last Night's awards?

From the way it was going earlier in the night, it looked like the Aviator was going to take home everything. Color me surprised for Clint, Jamie, and MDB for winning.

Chris Rock was thankfully not as politcal as the people on the radio hyped although no offence, I felt that the whole race card was played a little too much.

Great job for speeding up the smaller awards, good stuff there. I did think it was funny that for visual effects, the Spiderman guys gave their thanks for there not being a fourth LotR.

I did think that Harry Potter should've won for best score because I think that was some of John William's best work in awhile (you know how everything of his begins to sound alike, especially on the last two soundtracks) because the Harry Potter Soundtrack was just... amazing in my opinion.

And what was with the Aviator winning best costumes? I was completely lost there.

If you look at the history it makes sense. It's a movie that deals a lot with Old Hollywood, something New Hollywood loves to look at, and in the past couple of decades only one non-period piece has won best costumes - Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

I was shocked that Harry Potter was nominated for so few things...and didn't win at all.

Beyonce was terrible AND boring
(if she had been just a little worse it would have been more entertaining)
the whole evening was a huge yawn....

I hated the business of 'speeding things up'
with the line up onstage.
and I REALLY hated the Price is Right style
of giving awards out in the aisles!

The whole thing really couldn't have been duller.

But I did discover that over on WE (Women's Entertainment cable channel)
they had Sandra Bernhardt and some gay Black guy dissing the show during the ads
THAT was entertaining!

I was glad Eternal Sunshine won best original screenplay - a bit perterbed it didn't get more nominations, though. Highly underrated flick, if ya ask me.

Felt like throwing something at Sean Penn for lashing out at Chris Rock for his Jude Law joke. Penn remembers he was Spicoli, right?

Also felt like throwing something at the Academy for choosing Prince ... d'ya hear that, PRINCE ... to award best song - when half the nomiations had foreign language titles. Actually, kudos to the Academy for that - revealed Prince's 2nd grade reading level. Fantastic.

Loved the outcome of the big awards. I am glad Ray didn't win because in my opinion Million Dollar Baby was a better movie.

Priscilla really deserved the award. That is a great movie.

I'm in agreement with most folks here, the show was less than stellar. Beyonce should not have been singing those songs. The aisle thing was weird. I haven't seen MDB yet, but I expected the Academy to vote for Eastwood. Jamie was a surprise and it makes sense when you factor in Cate's win. They were definitely celebrating memories last night: Those that are no longer with us and those that have been around a while.

I didn’t watch it.

I’m glad to hear that Million Dollar Baby won though. I didn’t care for it much, but I’ll concede that it was a good movie (what I saw of it) and probably worth the award. I really only watched less then half of it, so I’m guessing.

I never saw the Aviator. Mostly because it had DiCaprio in it, but people have told me that was a good one too. In fact, I don’t know that I actually saw any of the movies that were being nominated, with the exception of Lemony Snicket.

Renee Zellweger, I don’t think she won anything this time around, but I loved her in Cold Mountain.

What annoys me about the Academy Awards is that they've become a 'suck the ass of overpayed stars' party and they ignore the technical awards.

Way back when in 1927, the people who really make movies feared that all of the attention - and all the money - would end up in the hands of actors and a few directors, so they started the academy awards to recognize the technical crafts.

The 'small awards' are no less important than the acting/directing awards. These people's jobs are no less vital to the finished product than Halle's perky breasts. More vital perhaps ... at least their jobs are real.

I enjoy the technical awards and am disappointed more every year as they're relegated further and further to the dumpsters behind the Kodak Theatre.

i agree, but it wasn't even limited to the technical awards this year. The winner for best live-action short had to give his speech from the aisle (along with other winners, but i don't remember specifically who because i was listening to oasis on my headphones

). i felt horrible for the people who worked for years, worked their asses off, and finally won an oscar, only to be forced to give their speech in the aisle to a camera instead of on the oscar stage. what a gip.
