France runs fusion reactor for record 22 minutes
France has upped the ante in the quest for fusion power by maintaining a plasma reaction for over 22 minutes – a new record. The milestone was reached on February 12 at the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) WEST Tokamak reactor.
The CEA seems to have done considerably better than 10 seconds and gone 25% beyond what China achieved in January 2025 with 1,066 seconds. In the latest test, the WEST Tokamak held its reaction for 1,337 seconds.
The purpose of the test wasn't just to keep the plasma reaction going like a stage performer spinning plates. It was also to keep the reaction stable without the components in the reactor facing the plasma becoming eroded or polluted, or malfunctioning.
According to CEA, the next step will be to create even longer reactions that could amount to a combined time of several hours, with the temperature growing increasingly hotter. Though WEST will never become a true commercial reactor, the information gathered there will be used to improve more ambitious machines, like the giant International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) being built in the south of France.

Modified Pig inside humans?
Surgeons transplant genetically modified pig liver into Chinese patient
Organ appears to function for 10 days, raising prospect of short-term use for those on transplant list

Quote:
A genetically modified pig liver that was transplanted into a brain-dead patient appeared to function successfully inside their body for 10 days, according to the scientists who performed the groundbreaking procedure.
The surgery, at a Chinese hospital last year, is thought to mark the first time a pig liver has been transplanted into a human. It raises the prospect of pig livers serving as a “bridging organ” for patients on the waiting list for a transplant or to support liver function while their own organ regenerates.
Prof Lin Wang, who led the trial at Xijing hospital in Xi’an said: “This is the first time we tried to unravel whether the pig liver could work well in the human body and … whether it could replace the original human liver in the future. It is our dream to make this achievement.”
The advance is the latest in a series of transplants involving pig organs since 2022. Surgeons in the US and China have transplanted pig hearts, kidneys and a thymus gland into a small number of patients. Several died within months, although their severe illness at the outset meant it was unclear whether the transplants were a factor. But others have made a good recovery and have left hospital.
The latest procedure was carried out in a 50-year-old man diagnosed with brain death after a severe head injury. The patient’s own liver was intact and, in a surgery that took more than 10 hours, the organ taken from a genetically modified Bama miniature pig was plumbed into his blood supply as an additional liver.

German researchers say AI has designed tools humans don't yet understand for detecting gravitational waves, that may be up to ten times better

Gravitational waves, detected a century after they were first theorized, are space-time distortions caused by some of the most cataclysmic events in the Universe, including black hole mergers and supernovae. The successful detection of these waves has been made possible by ingenious detectors designed by human experts. Beyond these successful designs, the vast space of experimental configurations remains largely unexplored, offering an exciting territory potentially rich in innovative and unconventional detection strategies.
Here, we demonstrate an intelligent computational strategy to explore this enormous space, discovering unorthodox topologies for gravitational wave detectors that significantly outperform the currently best-known designs under realistic experimental constraints. This increases the potentially observable volume of the Universe by up to 50-fold. Moreover, by analyzing the best solutions from our superhuman algorithm, we uncover entirely new physics ideas at their core.
At a bigger picture, our methodology can readily be extended to AI-driven design of experiments across wide domains of fundamental physics, opening fascinating new windows into the Universe.
