I'm sure this had everything to do with their entire scam of a business model having the curtain ripped clean away once the internet became prominent.
I remember back when I was around 20 and bought my first guitar. I didn't have any band friends, and the closest thing I would have had was 2 friends who played trumpet in the band.
I went to Guitar Center on the exact right day at the exact right time because I bumped into a sales man who was a fellow Wrestler, an underclassman 2 years my junior, at my high school who I hadn't seen in a few years.
Without asking me any questions he said he was going to take care of me. Hell... I still might have got scammed, but I walked out of there paying only about 40%-45% of the sticker price on a starter Ibanez electric, a small amp, a bag and a few other basics. That was before I'd learned some good lessons about scams too, so it wouldn't have surprised future me if I spent at least 80% of the sticker price that day if I didn't bump into him. I'm sure that's part of their regular spiel... Make you feel special like they're doing this deal just for you because "you seem like cool guy".
Once the internet became prominent, I don't even understand how they could continue making money that way. I'm actually surprised they even exist in 2025 and didn't go the way of Circuit City years ago.
