Even Nosfaratu carries a $50 Million bill in America in 2024 huh?
I haven't seen even a screencap of the movie, so I can't speak to where the money went, but that's just disappointing to hear it cost that much is all.
It's hard to have low-budget fun in the genre when Hollywood can spend $50 Million on one.
I mean, it looks like a great idea now after it was a success, but that could have easily gone the way of The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

I think this one was a gamble. Very strange to release it on Christmas day instead of around Halloween too, especially considering how abysmally weak the Horror genre was this year as a whole, let alone in October.

To be fair though, I believe these problems were extremely exacerbated this year because of all the projects that were cancelled during and as a result of the writer/actor's strike last year, the interest rates rising and just the bad economy in general. I refuse to believe that an average year in Hollywood looks that bad. It makes sense when they're slashing away half of their projects that they'd remove the ones they were least sure of making any money first, and when you put out as little as they did in 2024 it should be expected that all there is on the top lists is familiar IPs.

If you look at the very bottom of each page, you can see how many movie entries are on the list each year. In 2024 there were only 187 movies on the list (And this includes all Chinese and other foreign born movies getting international releases). In 2023 there were 205 movies. In 2019 there were 285 movies. They put out 98 more movies in 2019 than they released in 2023. And you could probably assume that many of the cancelled projects in 2024 were big budget cancellations that could have made 2024's top list look quite a bit different.
Even 2023 looked quite a bit different in the Top 30 in regards to sequels/prequels.

8 non-Chinese movies in the Top 30 were not sequels, prequels or remakes. Techinically, The Flash doesn't fall into one of those categories, but it's got enough overlap for me to include it as one, or it would have been 9 out of 30.
Also, in 2024, the first non-sequel movie to make it on the Top 30 List was "It Ends With Us" at 20th. All 3 of the new properties that made the list were in the 20's.
In 2023, the Top 3 movies were new.
To be fair again, Barbie and Super Mario Bros. were almost guaranteed hits even though they were "new". The same could be said about Five Night's At Freddy's at 25th place. Any new entries for these fall under sequel territory, but they were all technically new as far as movie franchises go when they released last year.
But even if you removed both of those, you still would have Oppenheimer at number 1.
