Personally, I won't be buying any of it. But I hope Universal makes a ton of money on Serenity.

Ancien riche (box office receipts alone) may be preferable to nouveau riche (DVDs & tie-in merchandise), but the "riche" is the important part.

And a novel series :D But only if it's done properly - a limited number of books per year; keep the quality high - don't just bang out any trash and make sure it fits!

When I used to read the Trek books I got sick of all the inconsistancies, esspecially the stupidly major ones.

You say there are two books coming out after Serenity? Are they novels or "Behind the Scenes" kind of things?

Aw, heck. They can't track us down and MAKE us buy stuff, can they? No matter what's out there, we can make individual determinations like "I don't WANT an official Companion Tea Ceremony set," or "that's really tacky" or "that's too expensive."

there are three books coming out:

one is a novel:

one will be a movie script and behind the scenes:

I agree with you, but IMO it's bad luck just to refer to the show as a "franchise" in the first place. I call "franchise" the "F-word" because it always seems that the second something gets labelled a franchise, it becomes exactly the sort of marketroid crapping-ground you rightly want to avoid.

However, I think part of why "Firefly" didn't appeal to Fox was that it doesn't work well with product placements and such. Personally, I hate it when they do stuff like the Cap'n Mal Happy Meal, but I can put up with it - if Firefly invades McDonalds, that's easy to ignore, but if McDonalds invades Firefly, then I get pissed. Similarly, I have no trouble ignoring big bunches of novels that wander off in weird directions (And I can think of no better example than the Ssi-Ruuk(?) or whatever those murderous reptiles were in the Star Wars novels. I mean, Please.)

So, to sum up what's turning into a ramble, I don't mind the merchandising if it doesn't mess with the First Sources (series and movie(s)). But I'd be glad if they erred on the side of restraint in developing tie-ins.

I agree that merchandising should be kept to a minimum. I'm a fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars and the authors do bring their quirks to the story. Also, some of them haven't kept up with the shows and bring in contradictory elements to the story. I would rather stick with George Lucas's and Gene Roddenberry's visions of the characters and their universe. The same thing goes for Joss's Firefly. I don't plan on buying anything about Firefly that Joss hasn't produced, written, directed, etc.

I agree that I would hate to see a flood of low quality merchandise saturating the market, but I honestly don't think that is going to be an issue. By the nature of the show and the fact our fanbase is nowhere nearly as large as say Star Trek or Star Wars, I doubt very seriously we will see the inundation that we have from the above named franchises.

We must also keep Joss in mind when we think about merchandising. Surely we will not see any out of control marketing or merchandising while Joss has a say in things. He is very much in control and I don't think he will allow his creation to be preverted by greed for merchandise sales.

That said, I will buy anything merchandise wise they put out. I am a fan boy and gladly admit my addiction.
