i lent my dvds out to a mate a while ago. a big while ago, and i've been missing them, but didn't feel like forking out the £34 it tends to sit at for another copy before i get the chance to pick my old set up. so, imagine my surprise and glee when i found that the mighty play.com are currently offering it up for a mere £14.99. bargain price for all us uk browncoats looking to acquire a second copy or trying to talk friends into buying a set.

i'm just feeling all joyful about my new purchase and wanted to share it with some people who'd understand :)

Welcome to the 2 SET club. One set to loan out to friends/family, and the other one you keep for yourself. I try to watch the loaner and keep the 2nd set on the shelf.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

I still prefer my region 1 set but I have the region 2 now - which although are packaged differently, the screen quality is *much* better.

I think all the Fox DVDs are on offer at the moment - I think it is in this month's issue of Total Film that there is a promotion for all their DVDs (inc. the Roswell series, the Millennium series, and, in the bottom left corner (if I remember correctly) is Firefly.

I've seen them at £14.99 on Play.com and in Virgin and HMV. Firefly was also in WHSmiths with a sticker of £34.99. Underneath it was a big red sticker saying, "Half marked price".

It's rather frustrating since I just paid £25 a few days earlier for the boxset.

Similarly, the Babylon 5 boxsets are now £15 each on the internet - a few days before I saw this, I had bought Season 4 for £29.99. Grrrrr.

And to rub salt in the wound, last month I bought a new mobile phone for £49.99 (a Siemens camera phone which I thought was a good price for a camera phone) only to see it advertised on the Freeserve homepage at £29.99

I tell you, it's a conspiracy...

WHAT?? The image quality is different for the American and European sets? Oh no! Which version is better?

Sorry, I didn`t clarify - the quality of the picture on the region 2 (UK) version appearfs a lot clearer wich means ou pick up on all the fine details like the detailing of the lock on the deserted ship in `Serenity` - If you watch the region 1 DVD, you can only just make out that there`s the word `Press` at the top of the lock - whereas on the region 1 version, it can clearly be seen.

I started a thread short while back about the same, here -

I ordered from play.com yesterday at the price of £15. Today I discover that amazon.co.uk has lowered their price to £13... Last time I checked, yesterday I think, they charged £27...

Not that 2£ matter, esp considering that you need to add shipping to the amazon order... But still.. I usually use amazon (and cdon)...

a major part of that is just the different tv formats between the regions. the r1 set is formatted for ntsc whereas the r2 box is pal. ntsc is around 480 scanlines and 60hz, pal is 520ish scanlines at 50hz. basically, when the standards were being set up, the refresh rate was linked to the powergrid's frequency but with approximately the same amount of bandwidth allocated to each so ntsc less detailed but smoother than pal.

I sympathise entirely, iccledames. Last month I bought Babylon 5 season 5 in MVC for £50. Then I walked into HMV and saw it for £30.

"Gorramit Mal... I've forgotten my line."
