Trump's choice of Matt Gaetz for attorney general ranks next to the story of Roman Emperor Caligula deciding to nominate his horse, Incitatus, as a consul.

It was graphic way for Caligula to express his contempt for the Roman Senate. It was a way of proving that he could not merely bend the Senators to his will, but he could humiliate them as well.

While Gaetz escaped federal prosecution for child sex trafficking, the House Ethics Committee was reportedly on the cusp of releasing a highly critical report about his sexual involvement with minors, his illegal drug use, his misuse of campaign funds, and his abuses of House privileges. Gaetz only escaped that judgment by abruptly resigning from the House.

Uh huh.

Trump is fine.
He is also your current President.

For those bewildered by why so many Americans apparently voted against the values of liberal democracy, Balint Magyar has a useful formulation. “Liberal democracy,” he says, “offers moral constraints without problem-solving” — a lot of rules, not a lot of change — while “populism offers problem-solving without moral constraints.” Magyar, a scholar of autocracy, isn’t interested in calling Donald Trump a fascist. He sees the president-elect’s appeal in terms of something more primal: “Trump promises that you don’t have to think about other people.”

Trump and his supporters have shown tremendous hostility to civic institutions — the judiciary, the media, universities, many nonprofits, some religious groups — that seek to define and enforce our obligations to one another. He will reject that deliberative process, claiming for himself the exclusive right to define those obligations. If Trump’s first term is any indication, he will likely begin by getting rid of experts, regulators and other civil servants he sees as superfluous, eliminating jobs that he thinks simply shouldn’t exist.

Agreed, sad though that someone like Trump is running our country.

They just completely dismantled the Leftist Media complaints about the Supreme Court for the next 4 years. And it didn't cost us anything.

If necessary it will eventually end up in the Supreme Court, and the outcome there is going to be written in stone.

Democrats are playing checkers as usual.

The Supreme Court rejected a last-ditch effort by lawyers for President-elect Donald Trump to forestall his sentencing for his New York criminal conviction.

The five justice majority that voted to deny Trump's application wrote that the evidentiary issues Trump has complained about "can be addressed in the ordinary course on appeal."

They also noted that the judge overseeing Trump's New York case has signaled he will not sentence Trump to serve any time in jail, writing "the burden that sentencing will impose on the President-Elect's responsibilities is relatively insubstantial in light of the trial court's stated intent to impose a sentence of 'unconditional discharge' after a brief virtual hearing."

Justices Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch would have granted Trump's application for a postponement of sentencing, the majority wrote.

Speaking to reporters from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where the president-elect is meeting with Republican governors, Trump said he still plans to appeal the case, despite that the sentencing will lack jail time.

"They acknowledge what the judge said about no penalty, and there is, really, there's no penalty, but we're going to appeal anyway," Trump said.

"So I read it, and I thought it was a fair decision, actually. So I'll do my little thing tomorrow. They can have fun with their political opponent," he added.

Ted gets to post a few clickbait videos and feel good about himself tomorrow. That's what was lost here.

In two years he will be impeached. In two and a half years he'll be in jail.
