Yeah. I think we grew up in a pretty cool period of time.

Half the stuff my parents did or didn't do would probably have gotten us taken away by DCFS in 2024. I was a latchkey kid who was babysitting both of my brothers after school at home alone until around 6:30PM. They were 7 and 9 and the 7 year old was disabled. When I wasn't babysitting them, I could meet up with friends and get into trouble all day as long as we were home before the sun went down.

Until I was around 8 years old, my grandparents still had a rotary phone which they finally got rid of because you couldn't navigate any menus with a rotary phone. I was 9 or 10 years old before my mom got an answering machine that used micro cassette tapes for her message and the messages people left. Caller ID didn't come until later, and for the first few years you had to type something like "*67" and pay a fee to the phone company and they'd tell you the number that called you. I had the first pager among my friends at 18 and the first cell phone at 19. Primeco baby... $50/mo. in 1999 for 200 minutes. No text. No free nights or weekends. 50 cents per minute overage charges. I briefly had a free dial up internet with NetZero at my grandma's house, but I could only use that at night when everybody else was asleep and I wasn't tying up the phone lines. It wasn't until I was 25 and had my own place again that I finally got "High Speed" cable internet, which was very, very slow compared to the speeds we get today.

We're the generation that saw all of that.

The "survival horror" has been made into a movie, the term first used for the original Japanese Playstation release of Resident Evil aka Bio-hazard in 1996 but the genre might date back older 1980s Atari 2600, the Computer PC games, Interactive movie puzzle adventures, Nintendo platforms and Castlevania

It would be a stretch to call anything on the Nintendo "horror", but some argue that the Japan only release of "Sweet Home" was the origin of survival horror.

I don't know the intricacies of it all, but it is actually tied into the Resident Evil story. The game has gotten two different fan translations and I've played both of them. The first one was pretty cryptic with the puzzles and the second translation did a much better job letting you know what you were meant to do. The cool thing about the first translation was that they stuck the words "Resident Evil" into a sentence one of the NPCs said later in the game. The 2nd translation, being a lot more faithful to the original script, didn't have that line.

The game plays about as much like a survival horror game as an 8-bit game from the 90's could. You brought around two or three different teams of the 5 or 6 characters that are trapped in this haunted mansion, and each person has different skills that are needed to get to deeper parts of the game. Pretty easy at first, but as you learn more about the game the puzzles require you to do some planning to make sure you're getting the right group of people to the right place to complete the puzzles.

The action is straight up Dragon Warrior RPG. You move around in the mansion without seeing any of the enemies, but you drop into random turn-based combat from time to time. But unlike Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy or Wizardry there wasn't any "safe space". No town to go back to and rest up and restock supplies. You had a limited number of ways to keep yourself battle-ready and until the very end of the game they were usually in very short supply. Whenever you opened a door in the game it also had a door opening scene pop up like the first Resident Evil on Playstation had when moving from room to room.

It's one of a fairly long list of games that should have made it outside of Japan but never did. At least there's a strong community of people out there who have taken it upon themselves to spend their own free time doing this without any compensation. I remember being impressed when I saw my first translated Nintendo game. Now they're out there translating games from the Playstation 2 generation.

I'm not sure that over-saturating the market with video game content is the correct course of action now that the comic book movie is dying. Offerings like Fallout are the extreme exception to the rule when it comes to Hollywood trying to make video game adaptations.

8 years ago I would have been thrilled to see a Borderlands movie being made. Then it came out at least 5 years too late and was ruined by idiots. I assume that nobody involved in making that movie ever played more than 30 minutes of the game and only because they were forced to.

This should be an exciting time for gamers. We're having TV shows and movies being made that cost hundreds of millions of dollars. But after nearly a decade of woke ruining every story they could get their hands on, I don't think anybody gets excited when announcements for any video game adaptations are made.

I haven't seen a Fast and the Furious movie since the first one came out... was it back in the 90's? That being said, just having a guy who wrote for the 9th one doesn't send up any huge red flags for me. I could see where some people might worry that they're going to turn an intelligent story like Mass Effect's into a Michael Bay production, but let's be perfectly frank here... If it was just a mindless Michael Bay movie, that would be 10 times better than whatever woke shit this would have turned out to be if it were released in 2021.

I have no dog in this race. Mass Effect means nothing to me. I only know so much about it because my brother was a huge fan of the games. I hope they do it right for him.
