If it wuz just Putin driving the effort it probably woud hav stalled a long time ago, so I think therez alot uv playerz in the game with varying levelz uv power and a wide variety uv motivz.
1 major motiv I can see iz nostoljia by many peepl in Russia and the other former Soviet nationz.
Another iz a dezire by many nationz, rite wing political partyz, wealthy individualz and jiant corporationz to take down The United States uv America.

The Republican 'Party' (crime syndicate, really. includez their propaganda machine)
China'z ruling party
Rupert Murdoch (dezervz seperate mention bekuz he haz had such a big impact with Fox)
OPEC nationz
Minor playerz:
Iran
North Korea
Any number uv small dictatorships, relatively small companyz, myriad individualz with justifiable grujez agenst Uncle Sam.
Just idle speculation maybe. But it seemz therez more going on here than just coinsidental actionz by random entityz.

Yanno what Russia wants? REALLY wants?
To be left alone.
To trade whom it wants to trade with, and develop the way it thinks best.
Not to have regime change operations being bubbled up in neighboring countries,
Or destabiliation efforts promoted by the west within its borders.
Not to have hostile armies parked on its border.
And most especially, NOT TO HAVE NUCLEAR CAPABLE MISSILES WITHIN 5-10 MINUTES FLIGHT TIME.
Russia doesn't want Ukraine, or Latvia, or Poland, or anyplace else your paranoid fantasies dream up. When they were part of the Soviet Union, they sucked Russia dry.
What they would really like is to be bordered by neutral nations that aren't part of the western "chessboard".
