Though coming from a complicated past, Lily Bloom has always known the life she wants. While living in Boston, she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid and believes she may very well have found her soul mate. Soon, however, questions arise about their relationship, and to complicate matters her high school love interest, Atlas Corrigan, comes back into the picture, putting her relationship with Ryle in jeopardy.
This thing made $17 Million on Friday and had the 5th highest preview Thursday so far this year?
Literally... What the fuck?

Now how much did they spend on it
Sony /Columbia ?
The romantic drama
Women and Girls see movies together, see 'Twilight' the Sex in the City? or sado masochism Fifty Shades of Grey, also 'Barbie'? if you can get women into the cinema for the big chick flick just one day of the year then you have a winning box office. My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Four Weddings and a Funeral. Ghost is a chick flick. Dirty Dancing, Witches of Eastwick are chick flicks. Some comedy are disguised but at their core are Clueless and Legally Blonde are chick flicks, the disaster movie 'Titanic' is actually a Chick Flick.
'Blake Lively' is apparently a thing in Hollywood she voiced something in Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds voiced support for the movie promoted it
magazine writers are doing their own drama gossip, the movie writer didn't retweet bla bla... notable absence from the film's joint press events bla bla this ads to the advertising
so recent hype if she gave any interview and was in tv Gossip Girl
if there is 'sex talk' it could be banned in the Middle East but the Arab world doesn't add much to international box office
In the West the women also bring their 'boyfriends' and make their boyfriends buy tickets, just as a guy brings his girl to see some action shoot 'em up flick she considers boring.
Perhaps it already has a fan base or following as a romance novel
It can easily do as good as other chick flicks but it can not get anywhere near Titanic it can however do ok in numbers
maybe it is getting promotional stuff on facebook and snapchat ads, tv advert, magazine gossip.
To see how much it can make - Let's assume the budget is low very like a Low Budget Horror for example or indie 'Thriller' if it does not waste money on big sets, expensive explosions and CGI and it makes 250 Million that is A LOT of profit

Even without including the Thursday preview night, this thing is outgrossing Deadpool and Wolverine by over $1 Million so far.
I read last night the budget was $25 Million. It's basically made the budget back with two days to go. I don't think it will do quite that well, but it will be close to the $62.5 Million it needs to break even after Sunday. I figured this movie for about $15 Million tops this weekend.
These movies just don't do that well anymore. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (or 4?) last year didn't even gross $40 Million during its entire run.
The only thing comparable in recent years would have been that Sydney Sweeny rom-com that came out in December last year that I posted about last in the 2023 Hollywood thread. That also cost $25 Million and ended up grossing over $220 Million.
But I got the appeal there. The movie poster had two young, very sexy bodies on the cover. And they were on the beach without a lot of clothes during the middle of the cold winter.
This movie poster couldn't be more boring.
It's got to be a book following thing beforehand and Ryan Reynolds being in D&W right now.

$50,000,000 projected for the weekend in the US alone. That's just nuts.

It's based on a popular novel of the same name, I never heard of it but I'm sure it was popular with the ladies.

The woman who wrote the original romance novel will make money and get more attention
her books might have 'high sales'
it does not make me want to buy them
Columbia / Sony makes a lot of money, Columbia and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer seem to have almost died during the last recession but also survived somewhat, the Sony brand does ok it has a bunch of gamer anime stuff in Japan and it already kind of survives in the West with gaming sales and with brands like Marvel Spider-Man and Playstation brands, The Boys, Goosebumps, The Winter King, Dan Brown Da Vinci Code did ok and Bad Boys is going again even after the Will Smith slap event, they have the Karate Kid tv, they have A LOT of video game entertainment property
Borderlands officially flops, the news media are allowed say words like Turkey and Box Office Bomb

The novel was made for the movies:
Quote:
Chapter One
As I sit here with one foot on either side of the ledge, looking down from twelve stories above the streets of Boston, I can’t help but think about suicide.
Not my own. I like my life enough to want to see it through.
I’m more focused on other people, and how they ultimately come to the decision to just end their own lives. Do they ever regret it? In the moment after letting go and the second before they make impact, there has to be a little bit of remorse in that brief free fall. Do they look at the ground as it rushes toward them and think, “Well, crap. This was a bad idea.”
Somehow, I think not.
I think about death a lot. Particularly today, considering I just—twelve hours earlier—gave one of the most epic eulogies the people of Plethora, Maine, have ever witnessed. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the most epic. It very well could be considered the most disastrous. I guess that would depend on whether you were asking my mother or me. My mother, who probably won’t speak to me for a solid year after today.
Don’t get me wrong; the eulogy I delivered wasn’t profound enough to make history, like the one Brooke Shields delivered at Michael Jackson’s funeral. Or the one delivered by Steve Jobs’s sister. Or Pat Tillman’s brother. But it was epic in its own way.
I was nervous at first. It was the funeral of the prodigious Andrew Bloom, after all. Adored mayor of my hometown of Plethora, Maine. Owner of the most successful real-estate agency within city limits. Husband of the highly adored Jenny Bloom, the most revered teaching assistant in all of Plethora. And father of Lily Bloom—that strange girl with the erratic red hair who once fell in love with a homeless guy and brought great shame upon her entire family.
That would be me. I’m Lily Bloom, and Andrew was my father.
