Myself and many other members of the New England Browncoats Yahoo List are most definately planning on being there. We are thrilled to get a BDH up here in the northeast. Thanks for planning to make the trek.

As for Kaylee; your character successfully radiates innocence, common sense, and a free spirit all wrapped up in a young woman with a strong work ethic. There 'ain't nothin' idiotic about that'. When my daughter, Rowan, is a bit older (she's 2 now) I would be proud to have her look to your character for inner strength and genuine lightheartedness.

Goodness! I'm new here and I had no idea that herself was a member! I too would defend Kaylee (if it came up, so few think to attack) - and I applaud your range, Jewel, because I just saw "Wonderfalls" in its entirety and I wanted to tell-off Heidi just as much as I'd want to defend Kaylee. Well done!

Re: Orson Scott Card, I've lived in his home state of Utah since 1972 and he makes a lot more sense if you're used to Utah. Not that I agree with his politics, but I sure hear stuff like them a TON here. I do like his sci-fi work and respect his opinion, and it is good to have him in the browncoats' corner.

Keeping this short and sweet...

1.) Orson Scott Card is BIG GOOD DAMN SCI-FI WRITER! If you haven't read it, READ "Ender's Game". For him to say Firefly was "good", is damn fine praise!

2.) Orson, and everyone else seems to have missed the point that if all we see of Kaylee in any episode is smiles, then that's not Jewel's fault, that's the director's fault and the editor's fault and the producer's fault. They're the ones who tell the actress how to do her job, and decide what takes are good enough or not, and decide what ends up in the final product... (like the "dolly" under the Ambulance in Ariel).

3.) People going off about OSC as a person...
...get a life. Geez. A SCI-FI writer writes a positive article about our BD Show and Movie. Great. I don't give a rat's rear about anything else OSC does, he's a SCI-FI writer 1st. That's his profession.

4.) Now on to other stuff... I've got a life.

Orson Scott Card was the Guest of Honor at Boskone 42, in Boston, MA. I may not agree with all his politics, but he was a very nice person and wonderful guest. He was a very good speaker and gave a wonderful explanation on the difficulty of making a movie of Ender's Game. But I digress,

When commenting on the difficulties of making movies he commented briefly on Firefly saying it was an amazing show and they fox executives were idiots to cancel it (I'm paraphrasing here, I don't remember his exact words). But it was a nice public display of support.

A nice review of the series overall, but I take issue with his harsher than necessary comments about Jewel/Kaylee. Not that she and the character need defending, but above all the characters and actors on the show, Kaylee was the one I immediately connected with. It could have been her warmth, humor, humility or complete lack of guile. Or it could have been that same sweet smile that Mr. Card took issue with.

Regardless, I became a huge fan of both the show and Jewel from the first episode on, as have friends of mine to whom I've loaned the DVD. So I hope that, as well as the support of thousands (soon to be millions) of fans more than counters any negativity from people like Mr. Card.

I have to agree with the majority, Orson is an INCREDIBLE writer. Enders Game is one of the best Sci-Fi novels ever written, although I didn't care for Speaker for the Dead, I did also love Lovelock, another book he wrote. He's also doing a new game called Advent Rising, which should be very interesting.

Anyway's, the praise is good, but it all comes down to.. DUH we all know it's an incredible show. Hands down, this was one of the best shows on Television. Western, Sci-fi, Drama, whatever, this show was just magical. I haven't been on the boards for a while, so I am just catching up, and I just read about the viewing in California... the people who came out with "Needs more lasers" or whatever, should be shot. Look at the calibur of television today. As OSC said, "Desperate Housewives, Felicity" and we have the always fantastic Survivor and Wife Swap and Trading Spouses! That's QUALITY TV folks. Oh and can we all give a big cheer for the O.C. I mean seriously now... is this what the general populations mindset is? It's just nausiating.

I am so happy to see that the actors are still fully behind this, and that so many fans are as well. Joss has such an incredible hit on his hands, why Fox buried it before it even came on is beyond me, but it doesn't surprise me. Look at Family Guy, cancel it, and then it sells so many box sets, they bring it back. How about some quality TV viewing?

Oh and Jewel, that's awesome you post here (from someone who doesn't post much) and I personally love seeing your smile. Your character was so real, and you fit your role so perfectly. Why can't we have a happy person in a show, someone who smiles a lot? I thought it was one of the best scenes when Mal first found you in the engine room doing your... business *ahem*. It showed that yes, you are happy smiley, yet you also have a more adult side that needs to be explored. The relationship between you and the doctor was one I really looked forward to unfolding.

Hopefully we'll get to see more of your smile soon. Is there any talk whatsoever of what would happen if Serenity does well? Are we going to see a new show? I mean come on... we lose Firefly, now Enterprise...

Bring this show BACK!
