As long as the film gets people in the seats, and turns a profit they are happy. What new franchise can be rebooted to make the Gen X'Rs, and the tween/teen crowd excited to see?
B)Screenwriters have ADD big time. It shows in their work.

True that. They watch the internet to see which franchise has the collective interest of the most moviegoers and reboot that franchise - like Star Trek, Marvel Comics (X-Men, Spiderman, etc).
Throw in the latest hot young stars, jump on the bandwagon of the latest tech (3D), bait and switch, and viola rake in millions before anyone knows what hit them.
Or they re-fit old reliable franchises that made money, (Batman, Superman) throw a lot of money at it and unleash the hotest director (Nolan) to breathe life into it and rake in the money.

Sometimes, for a beloved franchise, you hope against hope that some semblance of why you fell in love in the first place is present. Most of the ingredients were in place - Lisberger, Bridges, etc.
I knew the film was in trouble because I read that their script was lacking, but that the producers were calling in script doctors from Pixar to liven up the story. So I knew going in there was trouble. But, as a die-hard sci-fi fan and card-carrying Tron geek, well.........you know the rest.
The original did not have a script that "killed" or even a killer soundtrack. It had something else, it had heart. It was funny, quirky, avant garde in the tech sense, plus it had the charm of Jeff Bridges. It did not "kill" at the box office either. It developed a cult following after. People just fell in love with this little movie.
The original made a modest dent at the box office: $17M to produce and it made a little over $26.9M. Disney was disappointed because they thought they had the next Star Wars on hand. It is a cult classic because fans embraced it for years to come. It was ahead of its time. Sounds familiar don't it?
But several things are missing from this latest reboot, but I do want to spoil it for those who want to see for themselves. The warning flare has been jettisoned, proceed at your own risk.

Well, Legacy cost $170 million, and worldwide it's made a little over $154 million dollars to date. Certainly isn't going to make any coin for Disney.
A friend watched it, and said it was vibrant, and full of color. I asked if he was on crack, because the version I watched was damn near black, and white. Blue film filter with a couple streaks of neon thrown in. Like the film itself very bleak, and desolate.

Ah... So here's the thread I couldn't find!
Personally, I agree with your friend, Oppyh. I found the movie completely enjoyable and I loved the visuals. It didn't seem bleak at all to me.
My wife, who is no SciFi fan by any stretch of the imagination loved this movie as well. A well spent $8.50 per person, we thought.

Thats good. Glad you, and your wife enjoyed it. Film is such a subjective medium. Everyone interprets what they watch differently. A highly stylized, visual film like this could be taken a million different ways. I just didn't warm up to it. I actually bought the soundtrack though...pretty amazing.

I wouldn't expect a trilogy following the reviews and the "poor" box office showing. Imagine $154M is a poor showing. Who'd a thunk it!
By H-wood standards this is considered a box office flop, not that the uninspired story had anything to do with it (wink!).
They gave this dude, Joseph Kosinski, $170M to make this movie and they can't think to give Joss even half that to make a Serenity sequel.
There is no justice in this world.
