FORBES: 3 Reasons Why This Season Of Layoffs May Destroy The Future Of Work

Years ago, I worked as a lawyer for an acquired regional bank. To eliminate redundancies, the new general counsel laid off the lawyers he didn’t need. He posted a schedule with everyone’s name on it, parked himself in an empty office and met each lawyer at the appointed time. If they were fired, they walked out holding a folder. If they kept their job, they walked out empty handed. The rest of the department sat in the hall waiting to see how people emerged, keeping track and calculating odds. The process was cruel, public and unnecessary. And those of us who kept our jobs moved forward with high trepidation and low trust.

In those days, layoffs were used as a last resort: in mergers or extreme financial hardship. Today, they are ubiquitous. In 2023, U.S. layoffs were 98% higher than 2022. And 2024 is not far behind. January felt like open season on employees–especially in the tech sector–with the second highest January layoffs in the past 15 years.

BuzzFeed sells Complex for $108.6M, will lay off 16% of its workforce
In addition to selling media startup Complex, BuzzFeed also announced it will be laying off 16% of its workforce due to company restructuring.

BuzzFeed bought Complex Networks in December 2021 for around $198 million in cash and $96 million in equity.

Nice. You turned $294 Million into $108 Million. Good Job. Bravo.

Quote:

According to the company, the money from the sale will help BuzzFeed, Inc. improve its financial health by reducing debt and increasing liquidity.

Last month, in a financial filing BuzzFeed said that it would have $150 million in debt due by 2026, along with an extra $33.8 million from a line of credit, the New York Times reported.

And it won't even pay off your $183.8 Million debt.

What an apropos name... Buzzfeed must be short for Buzzard Feed.

The Buzzards are circling now.

Won't be long before the originators of Manspreading are gone forever.

Tick Tock.

CNBC: Laid-off techies face ‘sense of impending doom’ with job cuts at highest since dot-com crash

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/15/laid-off-techies-struggle-to-find-jobs
-with-cuts-at-highest-since-2001.html

Quote:

With tech layoffs at their highest since the 2001 dot-com crash, the job hunt is getting harder and many in the industry are being forced to settle for pay cuts if they can find a new gig at all.

Been there, done that...

During the DotCom crash, the jobs just dried up with a lot of businesses disappearing.

During the 2008-2012 crash, the jobs were being shipped overseas to places like India. My job didn't go overseas. My salary went overseas and paid to employ 5 people in India with college degrees who were living like kings at the time with $10k per year US. By now, 90% or more of the job I did back then doesn't even need a human to do it.

It's the worst of all worlds for them now. Venture capital dried up and these jobs won't ever come back. What isn't going to be done by AI is still being shipped overseas.

I hope ya'all saved some of that money. For a lot of you, it's going to be nothing but retail jobs in your future and a worthless degree. You're far too old to get into the trades now, seeing as how you're in your mid-30's and you don't even know how to hold a hammer.

Wait a minute here... I thought Joe Biden* and the Democrats were bringing the tech jobs and chip processing back to the states, weren't they? They sure dumped billions of taxpayer dollars into nothing here, it would seem. Imagine that, huh?

US chipmaker says it will also reduce capital spending as turnaround strategy hits another setback

That dividend you were all enjoying if you held Intel is gone too. You're not getting that now.

Just add that to the long list of things that Kamala can't lie about anymore.

Texas has sought to attract companies with lower taxes and lighter regulation. More than 300 companies have moved to the state since 2015, helping to drive a boom that has turned the Lone Star into the eighth largest economy in the world — ahead of Canada, Italy and Russia.

Chevron will gradually move all corporate functions to Houston over the next five years with positions supporting its California operations remaining in San Ramon.

I wouldn't go throwing stones from that glass house, CNN. Your layoffs might not have been announced yet, but your parent company just wrote down over $9 Billion and it's been said that CNN is now a negative value on the books.

Warner Bros. Shares Tumble on $9.1 Billion TV Network Writedown

Oh... My mistake.

Quote:

Warner Bros. has eliminated more than 2,000 positions over the past year and slashed 100 jobs at CNN last month. The company raised subscription prices for its Max streaming service in June.

You've already lost 100 jobs just last month. More incoming.

You'd better hope that Trump wins in November or your network dies outright.
