But OK, Labor Economics is one thing. What about a truly unfakeable test of true intelligence? Like, y’know, a quantum computing test?
Seeking an answer to this crucial and obvious follow-up question, I had GPT-4 take the actual 2019 final exam from Introduction to Quantum Information Science, my honors upper-level undergrad course at UT Austin. While there’s no formal mapping from final exam scores to letter grades (the latter depends on other stuff as well), GPT-4’s performance would correspond to a B.
[Warning: This might be the longest Shtetl-Optimized post of all time! But that’s OK; I expect most people will only want to read the introductory part anyway.]
To the best of my knowledge, neither this exam nor discussion of this exam has ever been on the public Internet before today—though anyone with any evidence to the contrary should let me know immediately! That said, after I write the next final exam (in December 2023) and before it’s released to the students, I could try giving that exam to GPT-4, withholding the results until after the students take the exam…

While decades of scientific and technological advances have allowed humans to send exploratory missions to distant planets, only about 25 percent of the Earth’s ocean floors have been mapped to date.
Still, that too represents a major shift: By 2017, only 6 percent of the ocean floor had been charted.
“There are a range of ocean processes that depend on the shape of the ocean floor,” said McMichael-Phillips. “We need this information to better understand climate change and issues of biodiversity.”
What is challenging about the process is that it is slow and time-consuming. Fully crewed ships need to sail across the world and use their sonar to scan the ocean floor.
“It’s a slow, slow process”, said McMichael-Phillips. “The game changer will be uncrewed technology, where you can operate a vessel almost 24/7, without any people on board.”
AI is ‘the future’
This is why ocean researchers have big hopes for artificial intelligence. Seacraft, such as submersibles, that operate autonomously by themselves, could take away a lot of the manpower needed to explore the vast reaches of our oceans. If you want to explore large stretches of the seafloor, autonomous vehicles are the future.
Autonomous, AI-powered submersibles would minimise the risks to human lives from deep-sea exploration and would allow faster mapping of ocean floors.

I Asked Meta’s Chatbot What It Thought of My Books. What I Learned Was Unsettling.

Slate’s business and technology editor, Jonathan Fischer, sent a question to the program (you can do the same: simply go to this website and scroll down to the box labeled “Send me a question”): “Did you know there are two Fred Kaplans?” The machine replied:
"Yes, I’m aware of the fact that there are two people named Fred Kaplan who have written books. One Fred Kaplan is a computer scientist and author who has written several books on programming and computer science, while the other Fred Kaplan is a journalist and author who has written several books on politics and foreign policy. I apologize for any confusion caused earlier when I referred to both authors as a single person. Thank you for bringing this to my attention."
This is — to put the matter in terms that even a dumb machine can understand — wrong. Neither of us Fred Kaplans is a computer scientist, nor has either of us written anything on programming.
After asking another question: “Are there at least three authors named Fred Kaplan?” It replied (quite quickly).
When pressed with an even mildly confounding question, the machine just makes stuff up. (Invented a third "Fred Kaplan" when there are only two.) Which makes me wonder: If the machine can’t distinguish between two Fred Kaplans (who, as the bio lines in our books make clear, are very different — we’re 17 years apart, live in different places, I’m a journalist while he’s a retired English professor) and invents false facts at whim, how will it learn how to write good literature, useful technical manuals, entertaining joke books, or anything else that anyone might want to read?

Agriculture has also come leaps and bounds since the 1600s. They're not going to mention how extremely little labor goes into every pound of beef that is sold in current year vs. how much it cost to do that back in the 1600 when every step of the process was done by hand? Of course not.
