Havin' A Baby? Check out the names...

'kay... So I'm watching the show that -- like a changeling of legend -- replaced the formerly excellent ScreenSavers. Same name, but not the same show.

Anyhoo, Sarah Lane (every geek's poster girl) does a piece on this baby name website. I go there, do the bit of putting in all my family's names. Of course, my wife's name is Kayley; but as I get to 'Kayle...' the site's graph is culling the results down to 'Kaylee', 'Kayleigh' and 'Kayley'. The variant 'Kaylee' was not in the top 1000 baby names in 1970, was 583 in the 80's, 142nd in the 90's and was #54 with a bullet in 2003.

So here's the question begged by this data: Are you guys all naming your girlchild 'Kaylee', or what?!

Zoe was the only other high-scoring BDH name (#58), but I reckon it's relatively more traditional than the specific 'Kaylee'. Surprisingly, nobody's ever named a boy 'Jayne' or 'zoid'... Could've knocked me over with a feather.

If y'all are naming your baby girls after our favorite mechanic, why not go with the most correct 'Kaywinnit Lee', and nickname 'Kaylee'? Personally, zoid really digs the idea of guerilla marketing from the womb. Now that's fandom!

Yup. I think it's winding down from River Phoenix's heyday. If he'd lived longer (or died a little less tragically) it would be a bigger number today. But, I predict that 'River' for girls will be a big mover for 2006...

Well,
I actually had planned on naming my first female child "Kayleigh" since around '89. More based on the Marillion song of the same name. I think it hit #7 on the charts here in the states in '85. Guess I should probably look to dating and such before I really plan too much on kids names, but I just don't think that's like to happen.

I liked that song, too. And "Ceilidh" (Scots) or "Céilí" (reformed Irish) -- both pronounced 'kaylee', give or take a glottal stop -- is a traditional social dance held "in most town and village halls on Friday or Saturday nights and even now they are not uncommon." Before I met my wife of 17 years, I had been enamored of a little film, titled "Local Hero", particularly since it was filmed in part in my hometown of Houston. They hold a ceilidh in the movie; then I, too, went to Britain and married my very own Kayley. There are no coincidences...

The point is that folks are naming their girls 'Kaylee' in record numbers, not 'Kayley' or 'Kayleigh'. That's very specific and thought-provoking, IMO...

P.S.
My wife was actually intended to be named 'Keeley', after one of her father's favorite singers of the era, Keeley Smith (of duets with Louis Prima in the 40's - 50's); but they got it misspelled on the birth cert (those crazy Brits), so she's 'Kayley', instead. Again, there are no coincidences: How could I have relocated from Houston to East Anglia without there being a 'Kayley' to marry and save me?

I was going to comment on Malcolm... but he's in the 500's and surpassed by Malik. wow.

I'm not sure I'd label Zoe as traditional looking at the graph... (although more traditional than Kaylee, maybe)

EDIT: disturbing. Harold (my father's first name) is ranked #841 as a GIRLS NAME in the 1920's. Who would name a girl Harold?

Hey! I thought I was every geek's poster girl?

I still tivo TSS, but I don't necessarily watch it. So sad. So very sad.

I've always liked Lorelei and Celia. Kaylee's nice. I would consider doing the Kaywinnit thing or maybe Serra, but the SO is not so into our BDHs as I am. My goal is to have my child be the only one in class or on the soccer team with that name. It bugs me when there's five Jennifers, three Jessicas, and seven Michaels in one room---comes from having a less common name.

A worthy goal. Have you considered Nimrod or Jezebel? They're two good ol' names that haven't been used overmuch lately.

Funny that this conversation should be happening now - this is my first time walking the world for several months, and my absence was due to pregnancy and birth (baby girl, two months old and doing fabulously! Pictures? I thought you'd never ask... )

Didn't name her Kaylee though, but I agree with the idea of giving your child a name that will mean she's the only one in the class with it. But it's a fine line though, because you really don't want her to have a name that everyone's going to mispronounce or just look askance at...

This naming business... it's difficult! I ended up reading a name dictionary from cover to cover!

I've always loved the name "Saffron," ever since I saw "Ab Fab" back in college. Of course, now that my married name is Fennell, I can't name my daughter that or she'd sound like a spice rack! ;)

"Ginger" and "Rosemary" are right out, too.
