Brics Summit 2023 Live Updates: Brics nations agree to expand developing world bloc
Leaders of the Brics bloc of leading developing countries have agreed mechanisms for considering new members, South Africa said on Wednesday, paving the way for dozens of interested nations to join the group which has pledged to champion the "global south". Agreement on expansion could help lend global clout to Brics - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - at a time when geopolitical polarisation is spurring efforts by Beijing and Moscow to forge it into a viable counterweight to the West. "We have agreed on the matter of expansion," South Africa's foreign minister Naledi Pandor said on Ubuntu Radio, a station run by her ministry, following a meeting by Brics leaders at a three-day summit. I read, don't remember where,that Modi was against expansion bc China is Saudi Arabia's biggest market, and Modi felt that China would have too much influence.
If true, I can picture the backroom negotiations... Modi: "Well, we can include Saudi Arabia if we also include X, Y, and Z to balance things out"

What the article alludes to, but doesn't make explicit, is that there is also a BRICS Bank, called the New Development Bank

If this NDB serves as a clearinghouse for bank to bank exchange, and they communicate on a non-SWIFT system (Russia and China each have non-SWIFT interbank systems that they've coordinated with each other, bypassing SWIFT and the Bank of International Settlements - BIS- entirely) then the BRICS nations can trade with each other entirely outside of the dollar. Altho BRICS nations such as China and Saudi Arabia will almost certainly continue to also accept the USD and Euro.
AFA investment loans ... China is more than willing to take the place of the IMF and World Bank. One must be careful when signing a deal with China... but not as careful as when getting a loan from the IMF and World Bank, which have strict political and policy requirements that they impose on their debtors. (i.e. "austerity")

So noodling on this while doing dishes, what I heard was...
China wanted the major oil producers and got Saudi Arabia and UAE
Russia wanted a friend and got Egypt (and Iran?)
South Africa wanted another African state and got Ethiopia
Brazil wanted another South American nation and got Argentina
And what did Modi get? The booby prize??
Also, Argentina isn't a stable partner, and- like NATO - the procedure for joining seems to be well worked out, but the procedure for leaving, or being kicked out, doesn't exist. I expect they're going to have to figure that part out!
