Uggh... Barbie looks awful (and Oppenheimer is too long)

But to its credit, Barbie DOES appear to have an actual story with acts, clearly separating it from any similarly woke schlock that Disney has put out in recent years.

Personally, I don't see what all the hype about this movie OR Oppenheimer is all about.

Bruce says "The long awaited release of Barbie and Oppenheimer is finally here. The pair, fondly referred to by the moniker, “Barbenheimer” is poised to headline one of the biggest movie-going weekends in a few years."

Why?

Barbie isn't going to be taking anybody away from SoF or MI7. The only overlap I could see at all would be a guy who wanted to see MI7 on a date but caved to the wishes of the girlfriend who wanted to see Barbie instead. Poor dudes. I think Barbie will probably crush what was left of the rest of the movies on the top 10 list for the next few weeks.

Being a Biopic, Oppenheimer will probably have some overlap in the group that would see SoF. But 3 hours long? Yikes. I've heard complaints that Dead Reckoning is too long, and yeah, at 2 hours and 45 minutes it certainly is. But at least that won't feel like you're doing homework like sitting through Oppenheimer without the ability to get up to stretch and take a leak without missing anything will.

I might be wrong, but I'm going to come right out against the tide and say that neither of these movies is going to be the 2023 box office saviors that the critics and Twitter bots are saying that they will be.

'Long' should not be so much of a problem if you have seen other long films, Dances With Wolves, LOTR, Seven Samurai, Interstellar, Carpenter's The Thing remake, The Deer Hunter, Avatar, Doctor Zhivago, Fiddler on the Roof, Ben-Hur, Avengers End Game, The Right Stuff, Last of the Mohicans, Gone With the Wind.

the perception of 'Long' can also be a matter of perspective I sometimes find 1 hour 20 min films to feel too long, I have never finished the Oscar winning 'The English Patient' I might only have seen 20mins or half an hour of it on tv but everytime those 20 mins it felt like 4 hours 'Long'

"Long" isn't a big deal when you're at home and you can pause and and/or go back to something you missed.

One of the problems with modern cinema is how long they've been making the movies. Since Nolan is making the movie, there's a fairly decent chance that a 3 hour runtime is justified. Many movies today with 2.5 to 3 hour or more run times are not justified though, and there was lazy editing and/or a director that thought what they did was a lot better than it actually was. Of the few movies I've watched out of the last 5 to 10 years, quite a few of them were long movies. And even being at home while watching them, they felt far too long and easily had 20 minutes to a half-hour that could have been removed without sacrificing the quality of the flick. In fact, the long run time actually brought the movies down in most cases.

Leave the long run times for a director's cut that die hard fans will want to pay money to see after the fact. 2 hours is already pushing it. 3 hours in a cinema with no intermission is miserable.

I weep for humanity...

According to The Numbers, Barbie made $22,300,000 in previews on Thursday. The only movie to beat that in 2023 was Super Mario Bros with over $31 Million.

Nobody else was even close, with Guardians 3 and Ant Man 3 making $17.5 Million and Miles Morales 2 making $17.35 Million.

Gross.

Well... let's try to look at the bright side. At least people are telling Disney and WB that they're tired of superhero flicks anyhow.

Oppenheimer, meanwhile, made a much more modest $10,500,000 which is about what I expected either of these films to make in previews.

I can believe the $ from Wed were about $7M, and then Thurs would be about $14M.
That would explain the $7M missing from average Wed total Box Office.

If that were the case, Barbie would have been a Thursday release instead of a Friday release.

And if they were taking money for Barbie since Wednesday night, that means that SoF was not number 1 in the Box Office for Thursday.

Oppenheimer encouraged them on, and his charisma cast a sort of spell over the campers. It is no coincidence that much of the serious thinking about the bomb — morally and politically — happened elsewhere, in Chicago under Leo Szilard or in the giant head of the Danish genius Niels Bohr. Oppenheimer whipped them up with a simple message: we need to get the bomb before Hitler.

As it turns out, this was all mistaken. We now know that the Nazis had decided against a nuclear fission program by 1942. Nazi planners needed raw materials and manpower for armaments production, and Nazi scientists thought a bomb couldn’t be delivered in time to affect the war in Europe, which very much proved to be the case.
