Been busy so I haven't devoted much time to this, but spent some time puzzling over the source of this mutiny, its resolution, and what it all means for Russia.
I think the ultimate cause was the reliance of the Russian government on PMCs like Wagner. There are a number of constitutional and political restraints on Russia sending troops to fight foreign wars in Africa, the Mideast, and so forth. While the Russian air force was extremely active in Syria, the bulk of Russia's (fairly small) ground forces were PMCs, with a few official trainers, advisors, and intel thrown in.
The other aspect is that Putin has two sources for his support: a normalized economy and a sharp nationalist bent. However, these can be contradictory and they appeal to two that don't overlap much. He is also extremely risk averse.
Altho he's been known to take swift and decisive action (recently in Kazakhstan and earlier in Chechnya) most often he takes a squishy approach. For example, he could without a doubt bomb all American positions in Syria and clip Israel's nose over Syria... but he doesn't. He still does a dance with Erdogan. He started the SMO softly softly, so it's hard to know when he's going to go full-on Grozny on someone and when he's going to just wind things down.
The one thing I can't square is his calling Prigozhin a traitor and the next day just send him into exile. He's had to explain that recently so I think he's taken some criticism for not dealing with Prigozhin harshly. I'm still trying to figure out the about-face.
One more thing: Apparently orders came down from on high not to interfere with Prigozhin. So border guards, police, the military itself were all told to stand down. The only death was an IL-something observational plane that was shot down by Prigozhin's splinter forces with a Pantsir. They weren't supposed to have Pantsirs so Russian internal security is delving into that.
All Russian officials and semi-officials, even ones critical of the Russian military and how the SMO is being conducted (they want a more aggressive approach) were forced to choose and came down on Putin's side.
No doubt FSB is looking into anyone who may have supported the mutiny. The way to keep this from happening again is to eliminate Wagner, which is being incorporated into the Russian military by accepting Wagner forces. Prigozhin himself and his band of Merrie Men could be contracted to fight in Africa.

Prigozhin,as it turns out, had been in jail for armed robber - choking and beating a woman on the street along with somebody else, and robbing her of everything including her boots.
He was a self-promoting businessman who had lucrative contracts supplying food to schools and the Russian military, as well as being part-owner of Wagner. Apparently his orders were to stay on the outskirts of Bakhmut and engage Ukrainian the periphery. But he decided to take Bakhmut, which meant that many of his fighters were killed and the Russian MoD had to divert troops to protect his flanks, planes, artillery and tanks to keep Wagner from getting slaughtered. As a result of breaking orders his contracts were being eliminated, and that's when he went ballistic.
The bad blood between him a the Russian MoD goes back to Syria, when he and a local Syrian warlord decided to cross the line of contact that Russia and USA had decided on, in order to grab some oilfields. When USA asked Russia "are those your guys?" Russuyof course said "no", so USA bombed them and Wagner lost appx a dozen men.

Against that backdrop, Russia and the US opened up a communications hotline to avoid direct conflict with each other while supporting their proxies on opposite sides. In February 2018, after three years of gingerly avoiding a direct confrontation, the two world powers went toe to toe for the first time since the end of World War I in what came to be known as the Battle of Khasham — a roughly four-hour battle in which the mighty Russian bear (with its Syrian allies) was reduced to a whimpering pup by a much smaller force of American commandos.
As the afternoon sun began to sink over the cradle of civilization on Feb. 7, 2018, a group of US Marines and Army Special Forces soldiers watched surveillance drone feeds in disbelief as a large enemy force amassed 20 miles away near the eastern bank of the Euphrates River. The combined group of Syrian forces and Russian mercenaries from the infamous Kremlin-linked Wagner Group swelled to an estimated 500 troops by early evening. With them were 27 vehicles — including Russian T-72 tanks and armored personnel carriers.
American brass monitoring the situation at the air operations center at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and the Pentagon were baffled as they watched a massive enemy force positioning itself to attack a nearby outpost where about 30 US Army Rangers and Delta Force commandos from the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) were working alongside Kurdish and Arab forces. American commanders readied aircraft and ground crews, and the members of the JSOC detachment prepared to defend themselves.
The Marines and Green Berets at the mission support site 20 miles away from the JSOC outpost in Deir al-Zour in northwestern Syria prepared a quick-reaction force of about 16 troops, loading four mine-resistant vehicles with anti-tank missiles, thermal optics, food, and water.
At 8:30 p.m., as three Russian tanks moved in closer, it became clear an attack was imminent, and the quick-reaction force prepared to launch.
Fighting from their vehicles, the Green Berets and Marines engaged the rapidly diminishing enemy force. Several Marines ran much-needed ammo to the commandos’ defensive positions while combat controllers guided a second wave of lethal strikes from American aircraft. An hour after the QRF’s arrival, the remnants of the attacking force fled the field. In their wake lay between 200 and 300 dead fighters. Inside the JSOC outpost, one allied Syrian fighter was wounded, and no Americans were harmed.

russian command told him to stay on his side of the line, and russian air forces/ close ground support wasn't there to protect him.
so, yep, that's what happens when you go off on your own without proper artillery/ missile/ air support like progozhin did: you get slaughtered. just like ukrainians are getting slaughered now.
i'm surprsed they didn't break off their contract with wagner right there.
fwiw, progozhin isn't any kind of military commander. he's had no military training, and putting him in charge of military decisions ...? bad idea.
