Meanwhile, the two movies that Chinese people WERE choosing to see in droves while they avoided this woke disaster like the plague were Black Spider-Man Miles Morales and the extremely diverse cast of Fast X.

Another good story ruined by reality.

Opinion: My childhood in Hong Kong prepared me for how China reacted to ‘The Little Mermaid’

Opinion by MonaLisa Leung Beckford
Updated 12:21 PM EDT, Mon June 26, 2023

My father is Chinese and my mother is Jamaican. I was born in Hong Kong, which is where I spent the first 12 years of my life. Being Black profoundly shaped my early childhood. At school, on the playground and in my neighborhood, my siblings and I were always the only Black kids around.

My excitement about the casting of “The Little Mermaid” turned to disappointment when I saw the negative reception the film received when it opened in Hong Kong. Many people posted derogatory commentary online, expressing displeasure that Halle Bailey, a Black actress, had been cast in the lead role.

As I scrolled through movie reviews on Douban (a popular Chinese movie review website), it was upsetting to see comments like, “she’s a Black clown mermaid” and “this is the ugliest version of ‘The Little Mermaid’.”

The remarks reminded me of the racism I encountered in my childhood as an Afro-Asian child in Hong Kong.

I was called all types of names in Cantonese, among them (dirty girl) and (black girl). There wasn’t much in the way of microaggressions – racism towards me was never subtle. Among my classmates, I was sometimes singled out for punishment by my teachers for innocuous behavior like biting my nails.

On one occasion, I was accused of having somehow caused a classmate’s eczema on her arm by my mere proximity to her. And for a school art project, rather than being praised for my keen eye and attention to detail, I was accused of plagiarism and punished for having turned in an assignment that looked too perfect to be my own handiwork.

One of the worst days of my childhood occurred on the night of my 10th birthday when I suffered an asthma attack and was coughing up blood. The emergency room doctor at one hospital turned me away, insisting that nothing serious was wrong with me. My parents took me to a different hospital, where I was admitted immediately. I was deemed sick enough to require four days of treatment there.

Against that backdrop of discriminatory treatment and racist taunts, I’m really not all that surprised about the negative reviews directed at a fictional Black mermaid. Colorism has existed in China since long before “The Little Mermaid.”

Anybody who uses the word microaggressions can be ignored out of hand.

CNN is the perfect place for that, since nobody watches or reads CNN in current year.

6ix, it is unsurprising that you stayed drunk for years since you are the guy who has never been anywhere, never done anything, unemployable, yet thinks he is a huge success because, you know, you recognized Trump very early as your ultimate leader, the perfect asshole for your kind. Don't forget to say, "Trump will be fine . . ."

I don't see how any of that has anything to do with nobody watching CNN, a silly woman who uses words like microaggressions or the failure of The Little Mermaid as a whole.

I've done plenty. Including quitting drinking cold turkey for going on 7 years now without any group meetings or self-help books, and earning the median wealth of your average adult in Iceland by the time I was 40 despite the drinking and other bad choices I made along the way.

And yes. Trump will be fine. But again, I don't see how that has anything to do with CNN putting itself out of business, an SJW brainlet it Hong Kong, or black Ariel not being Ariel.

When you were a child, did you miss the message that drunkenness is bad? For one example, the Simpsons have Homer and Barney pass the message on by example to little children that being drunk is bad. But you didn't get the message, did you? Oh, and read what each pack of cigarettes tells you, 6ix. "Smoking Kills" is another message that you are missing. As you demonstrate in nearly every comment you make, there are myriad more simple lessons you have not yet learned that go beyond drinking and smoking, but you have a disorderly mind that resists such lifesaving knowledge. Just say No to Nazism, 6ix. That is a life lesson Trumptards aren't able to grasp because it is abstract compared to the lesson about drunkenness. Just as there are many varieties of alcohol that make people into drunks, there are many varieties of politicians that make people into Nazis. Stay away from those politicians.

I don't read past idiocy like this, and I won't be judged by the likes of you either.

Stay on topic, or GTFO.

The topic is always the same: the people who defend Trump are mentally deranged, the same kind of derangement Trump has. You Trumptards don't recognize where and what limits you violate constantly. As a result, you constantly have problems. See for example how many thousands of times Trump has been sued or bankrupt or in the hospital or audited for tax cheating or divorced. You and Trump are crazy. That is the real topic, 6ix. Little Mermaid and Disney only bring highlights to your craziness.

Yes. The Little Mermaid Failure Thread

You seem to be really defensive about a movie that you pirated and disrespected Haken by posting pirate links on his boards for.

Keep defending the big Corps, buddy.

Big whoop. It's been a year of under-performing failures, and TLM is one of the most expensive movies that came out this year.

$289 Million is a terrible number for Disney when they were expecting over a Billion worldwide for this movie.

The BEST Disney can hope for at this point is to break even for 2023, or possibly end up making $100-$300 Million on all of their films combined.

Pre-Phase 4 of the MCU they were knocking out Billion Dollar movies left and right, both with their Marvel franchise and live-action remakes of old Disney classics.

They're in the hole over $4 Billion with Disney+. (And that's only what they're admitting to).

They've destroyed all three of the Lucasfilm IP's that they paid $4 Billion for, and they can't even sell Lucasfilm to anybody because it's not worth any money.

Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm toys won't sell and are still on store shelves 5 to 10 years after the movie came out.

Their shares are still down over $107 from their 2019 peak.

They have no movies coming out the rest of the year expected to make any real money.

Breaking even on Black Little Mermaid is nothing to celebrate. In fact, between that failure and the failure of Peter Pan and Wendy, there's talk that it might be a very, very long time that Disney decides to make another live-action remake of any of their properties... if ever.

All they had to do was give the people white Ariel with red hair and not stuff this piece of shit with Leftist agenda crap and this movie would have made more than Super Mario Brothers did worldwide, and it would have generated a billion dollars profit for them instead of the $70 or so Million they'll bank from it by the time it exits the box office.

I hope it was worth it, in a year where Disney isn't going to make any decent money off of any of its films outside of Guardian's of the Galaxy's last hurrah.
