Well, I think with SNOW WHITE, not only was it the first full length animated movie, but I'm guessing it was one of the pioneering animated film to use the multi-plane method. On the FANTASIA DVD, they talk about one of the early technological breakthroughs Walt created was this thing where there was this machine that had all these layers of animation and background on panels of glass stacked on one another so that a camera could zoom and pan on an image. It was to give the illusion that the camera was in the animated world and that it could travel through the space of that world towards a specific location.

I'm guessing that was the tech breakthrough, I dunno.

Makes sense to me.

Pirates had that seamless transition from live-Jack to CGI-motion-capture-skeleton-Jack --an effect that even the Matrix films couldn't match in quality (remember how CGI-Neo looked like a video-game model?). No cutting away, no switching camera angles --Brad Pitt just stepped back and became the CGI effect in a single shot. Perfect integration.

Pirates II was the first to have on-location motion-capture. That scene of Jones' Sea-Wraith crew walking out of the surf? That's real water splashing around their ankles.

Usually when people do motion-capture, they're on a bare soundstage, and the digital puppets are composited into the live footage (where the "human" actors are interacting with a ping-pong ball on a stick, or something). Pirates II had the actors "rigged" on location (and interacting with the props, sets, lighting, and even the elements), being captured in real-time with the rest of the cast.

I would say Marvel/Disney changed the game to a new level, I know some of the films are now seen as trash but what they have done for FX is incredible

Sure. Pre-Phase-Four, for the most part. They're all trash now. Not just Marvel, but DC as well. DC never really impressed at all in the special effects department after Nolan's Batman movies. The budgets keep getting more and more bloated, but the special effects get worse every year that passes.

This is what happens when you jump to quantity over quality.

Iron Man 1 from 15 years ago has better special effects than any Marvel movie or TV show to come out in the last 4 years. Don't believe me? Watch Iron Man and then watch any Marvel movie released after End Game back to back and see for yourself. Hell... we're getting to the point that Jurassic Park from 30 years ago holds up better than the new Marvel/DC stuff.

CGI can't be everything. You need practical effects, and you need to have at least SOME of your movies grounded in a reality that people can relate to. And they really need to stop making people who don't have specific super powers that would enable them to dish out and take a monster beating dishing them out and taking them. Everyone is capable of suspending disbelief to a certain extent, but in the effort to always one-up the previous outing they've pushed EVERYTHING to levels so obscene that people are just tuning out from exhaustion and boredom.

And if you don't use any practical effects at all and chose to go the entire CGI route like they do today, expect the already lesser-quality special effects to look EXTREMELY dated soon.

Remember how mind-blowing the special effects for The Matrix seemed when the movie first came out and much of the technology used in it was brand new? Most of that memory is just nostalgia in your head. If you watch The Matrix today, a great deal of the special effects scenes are laughingly outdated, whereas Jurassic Park from 6 years earlier, with the exception of a few questionable CGI scenes using 1993 technology holds up completely in 2023.

Seems like short shrift is given to underwater visual effects. IIRC Hunt For Red October was groundbreaking for that, tho I'm sure others contributed, and since then everybody has copied HFRO.

Backdraft made inroads on filming flames, which had been rarely done effectively for cinema (hint: flip the room upside down to film).

Terminator had groundbreaking effects not previously explored as competently, and certainly looks dated now.
But T2 had other effects, not really seen before, but separate from the original.

When looking at dated looking effects, try to remember that the digitizing process to view in Ultra Super Dooper Deluxe Extreme Vision was not the caliber of cinematography available at the time of the production.

Hmmmm. No Star Trek - based on a show which really did push the frontier forward.
Why not City of Lost Children?
The Thing (1982)?
James Bond?
Braveheart?
Total Recall?
12 Monkeys?
Valerian?
Bullet?

The Abyss was quite impressive for its time.

Not exactly true. They were able to film the movies in ultra-high definition if they paid for the expensive stock. There just wasn't anywhere to show the movies in that high of quality before HD theaters and flat screen TVs, so they didn't care all that much is all. This is why so many movies that have come out on BluRay or are streamed at 4k from eons ago can look amazing. But only if they properly preserved the original master print, and that print was filmed using the expensive film stock.

This is one of the reasons that so many of the special effects in The Flash when they were showing long dead versions of Superman looked like Playstation 2 graphics. They actually admitted to downloading videos from YouTube and putting them in the movie.

If I didn't mention The Thing anywhere in this thread, that was an oversight.

Was The Abyss really impressive visually? It seemed a lot of stationary activity, with an underwater set. The breaching was better.

THFRO was displaying 3D spatial maneuvering underwater in a way understandable to the ignorant audience - like dogfighting in the air. Be interesting to hear of a precursor in that vein.

I disagree.

That set was amazing.
