I'm no Physicist either but even if it is a backflow of excess energy, it still forms without specialized regulation which the folks at the SGC wouldn't have had until they had direct contact with the Asgard and stull don't seem to posess anyway.
Also, I have to think that the thud made by the Jaffa indicates a reformation of particles, given that A: only the parts of you that are within the confines of the wormhole demolecularize (Hence the loss of any parts that are on the other side of the gate at the time of closure or the regression of the energy backwash) explaining why you don't completely de-materialize on any part of you coming into contact with the event horizon, and B: Without having cohesion with other particles, and therefore sizable mass, the individual particles, even if hitting at the same time, would simply disperse in other directions upon coming into contact with the Iris and create no thud.
Furthermore, this discussion is kind of silly.

Yea it is kinda getting silly. It works that’s all that really matters.
At least you learned the term "The Kawoosh".

And only if they have something tiny to work on.

I keep hoping that someone's gonna get stuck behind the gate (on that length of catwalk) when it activates. There'll be some kinda emergency, Jaffa invasion or something, and they'll spend the whole thing just trapped back there, twiddling their thumbs, unable to get out.
Quote:I thought that was explained when they rebuilt the iris (after the black hole incident) with that alien metal whose name I can't recall (there was a whole episode about finding it, then a few eps later they had enough to reinforce the iris). Not naquadriah, but around the same time. Carter said that it was stronger than anything she knew of.

I don't know about that one, I haven't thought about it much. My question is, why doesn't the formation of the worm-hole de-molecularize the iris?
A few episodes later we saw Siler and his boys fussing with the iris, and Carter mentioned that they were reinforcing it with (alien metal). She said it'd stand up better to attacks, so I'm assuming the plasma backwash is handled (if it can shrug off a nuke [when Anubis invaded Earth in the S7/8 finale/premiere], it oughtta be able to handle a little wormhole spillage).
I noticed the change; they used to have to leave the iris open until the wormhole stabilized, then they quickly slammed it shut and hoped nothing got through. With the new iris, they can just keep it closed.

We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

The "alien metal" you refer to, do you mean the one on the indian planet?

Yea that would be funny until the guy remembers he can just hop over the gantry and craw out from the side.
